DAVAO CITY – Residents across Mindanao should remain alert for isolated rain showers and thunderstorms over the next 24 hours as a Low Pressure Area (LPA) located off Eastern Samar continues to influence weather conditions across the southern Philippines, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

In its latest regional weather forecast issued at 5:00 a.m. Tuesday, PAGASA’s Mindanao Regional Services Division (MINPRSD) reported that the LPA was last spotted approximately 165 kilometers east-northeast of Borongan City, Eastern Samar at 12.1°N, 126.9°E.

While the weather system is not expected to directly affect Mindanao, it is contributing to unstable atmospheric conditions that could trigger localized thunderstorms and rain showers throughout the island.

PAGASA said Mindanao will generally experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies, but warned that thunderstorms may become intense enough to produce flash floods and landslides, particularly in low-lying, flood-prone, and mountainous areas.

“Possible flash floods or landslides during severe thunderstorms,” the weather bureau warned.

Rain Showers Expected Across All Mindanao Regions

The forecast covers the entire island, including the Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, Davao Region, SOCCSKSARGEN, Caraga Region, and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

In the Zamboanga Peninsula, including Zamboanga City, Isabela City, and the provinces of Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, and Zamboanga Sibugay, residents can expect partly cloudy skies becoming cloudy at times with rain showers or thunderstorms. Daytime temperatures will range between 30°C and 33°C, while nighttime lows will be between 24°C and 25°C.

Across Northern Mindanao, the provinces of Bukidnon, Camiguin, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental, and Misamis Oriental are likewise forecast to experience intermittent thunderstorms. Temperatures will range from 19°C in Bukidnon’s highlands to as high as 32°C elsewhere in the region.

The Davao Region, including Metro Davao, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao Oriental, Davao de Oro, and Davao Occidental, will also see partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers and thunderstorms. Temperatures across the region are expected to reach 31°C to 33°C, with overnight lows between 23°C and 25°C.

Meanwhile, in SOCCSKSARGEN, including North Cotabato, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, and Sarangani, similar weather conditions are expected, with maximum temperatures reaching 33°C.

The Caraga Region—Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, and Dinagat Islands—will continue to experience warm but unstable weather conditions, with isolated thunderstorms likely during the afternoon and evening.

Likewise, provinces under BARMM, including Basilan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao del Norte, Maguindanao del Sur, and Cotabato City, are forecast to have occasional rain showers and thunderstorms with temperatures ranging from 23°C to 33°C.

Coastal Waters Remain Safe for Most Sea Travel

PAGASA said winds throughout Mindanao will remain light to moderate, blowing from the southwest to northwest.

Sea conditions are expected to be slight to moderate, with wave heights ranging from 0.6 to 1.5 meters, making coastal waters generally safe for most small fishing boats and other small sea vessels. However, mariners are still advised to exercise caution whenever thunderstorms develop, as these can produce sudden strong winds and rough seas.

Afternoon and Evening Thunderstorms Likely

Weather forecasters noted that although much of Mindanao may start the day with fair weather, residents should anticipate the development of localized thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening, a common weather pattern enhanced by the presence of the nearby LPA and daytime heating.

Authorities are urging the public to stay updated with the latest weather bulletins, especially those living in flood-prone communities, along riverbanks, and in landslide-susceptible areas.

PAGASA also reminded local disaster risk reduction offices and emergency responders to remain vigilant as severe thunderstorms may rapidly trigger flooding, landslides, reduced visibility, and dangerous lightning.
