CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines – Residents across Mindanao should remain on alert as localized thunderstorms, intermittent rainshowers, and rough coastal conditions are expected to persist over the next 24 hours despite Tropical Depression “Maymay” (international name: Kujira) moving away from the island.
In its Regional Weather Forecast for Mindanao issued at 5:00 a.m. on Friday, August 7, 2026, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) Mindanao Regional Services Division (MINPRSD) said that Tropical Depression “Maymay” was last estimated at 3:00 p.m. Thursday over the coastal waters of Dinapigue, Isabela.
The weather disturbance packs maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour near the center, with gustiness reaching up to 70 kilometers per hour, and is moving east-southeastward at 35 kilometers per hour.
Although the tropical depression remains far north of Mindanao, PAGASA said its influence, combined with prevailing weather systems, will continue to produce partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers and localized thunderstorms across the island.
Weather forecasters warned that severe thunderstorms may trigger flash floods and landslides, particularly in low-lying, flood-prone communities and mountainous areas.
Southwest Winds to Bring Rough Seas
PAGASA also warned fishermen, small vessel operators, and coastal communities of moderate to strong southwest winds prevailing over Mindanao.
Sea conditions are expected to range from moderate to rough, with wave heights reaching 1.2 to 3.0 meters, making sea travel potentially hazardous, especially for small fishing boats and other light watercraft.
Authorities advised those planning marine activities to monitor the latest weather bulletins before venturing out to sea.
Rainshowers Expected Across All Mindanao Regions
The forecast covers the entire island, with nearly all provinces expected to experience partly cloudy skies becoming cloudy at times with rainshowers or thunderstorms throughout the forecast period ending 5:00 a.m. Saturday, August 8.
The affected areas include:
- Zamboanga Peninsula – Zamboanga City, Isabela City, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, and Zamboanga Sibugay.
- Northern Mindanao – Bukidnon, Camiguin, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental, and Misamis Oriental.
- Davao Region – Davao City (Metro Davao), Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao Oriental, Davao de Oro, and Davao Occidental.
- SOCCSKSARGEN – South Cotabato, North Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, and Cotabato City.
- Caraga Region – Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, and Dinagat Islands.
- Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) – Basilan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao del Norte, and Maguindanao del Sur.
Temperatures to Remain Warm Despite Rain
Despite the expected rainshowers, daytime temperatures across Mindanao will remain generally warm.
Forecast temperatures range from 22°C to 35°C, with inland provinces such as Bukidnon and Lanao del Sur experiencing the coolest conditions, while several lowland and coastal areas in Caraga, Davao Region, Northern Mindanao, SOCCSKSARGEN, and Zamboanga Peninsula could see afternoon temperatures climbing to 34°C to 35°C.
Nighttime and early morning temperatures are expected to remain between 22°C and 26°C in most areas.
Public Advised to Stay Alert
PAGASA urged residents to remain vigilant, particularly during afternoon and evening thunderstorms, which may produce intense rainfall within a short period.
Local government units and disaster response agencies are encouraged to continue monitoring weather developments, especially in communities vulnerable to flooding, landslides, and other weather-related hazards.
Motorists are likewise advised to exercise caution on roads during heavy downpours due to reduced visibility and slippery conditions, while farmers and fisherfolk are urged to plan outdoor activities around the latest weather advisories.
PAGASA said it will continue to closely monitor Tropical Depression “Maymay” and other weather systems affecting the country and issue updates as necessary.
