MINDANAO — Most parts of Mindanao are expected to experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with rainshowers or thunderstorms from Thursday, August 13, through early Friday, August 14, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
In its regional weather forecast issued at 5 a.m. on August 13 and valid until 5 a.m. the following day, PAGASA’s Mindanao Regional Services Division said isolated rainshowers and localized thunderstorms may affect areas across the island.
The weather agency warned that severe thunderstorms could trigger flash floods or landslides, particularly in areas that receive heavy rainfall. Residents in communities vulnerable to flooding and landslides were advised to remain alert for sudden changes in weather conditions.
Rain and thunderstorms expected across Mindanao
The forecast covers virtually all major areas of Mindanao, with partly cloudy skies becoming cloudy at times and accompanied by rainshowers or thunderstorms.
In the Zamboanga Peninsula, Zamboanga City, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay and Isabela City are expected to experience similar conditions throughout the day and into the evening.
Northern Mindanao will also see partly cloudy to cloudy skies with rainshowers or thunderstorms in Bukidnon, Camiguin, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental and Misamis Oriental.
In Camiguin, however, PAGASA is forecasting moderate to strong winds from the south to southwest, with coastal waters expected to range from moderate to rough. Temperatures are forecast at 26°C to 34°C during the day and 26°C to 32°C overnight.
Across the Davao Region, Metro Davao, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao Oriental, Davao de Oro and Davao Occidental are likewise expected to experience rainshowers or thunderstorms.
Temperatures in the region are generally forecast to reach the low to mid-30s Celsius during the daytime before dropping overnight.
SOCCSKSARGEN, Caraga also under thunderstorm outlook
The same weather pattern is expected over SOCCSKSARGEN, including North Cotabato, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat and Sarangani.
Sultan Kudarat could reach a daytime high of 35°C, while South Cotabato is forecast to range from 24°C to 33°C. Sarangani is expected to record temperatures between 25°C and 32°C during the day and 25°C to 30°C at night.
Caraga will also remain vulnerable to rainshowers and thunderstorms. Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur and the Dinagat Islands are all included in the forecast.
Agusan del Sur and Surigao del Norte could reach 36°C, the highest daytime temperature indicated in the regional forecast, while other areas are expected to remain in the mid-30s.
BARMM areas also expecting rainshowers
The forecast likewise covers areas of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, including Cotabato City, Basilan, Lanao del Sur, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, Maguindanao del Norte and Maguindanao del Sur.
Maguindanao del Sur could reach a daytime high of 36°C, while Maguindanao del Norte is forecast to reach 35°C.
Sulu and Tawi-Tawi are expected to experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with rainshowers or thunderstorms, with daytime temperatures reaching 32°C and 33°C, respectively.
Across BARMM, winds are generally expected to remain light to moderate from the south to southwest, with coastal waters generally slight to moderate.
Southwesterly winds, generally manageable seas
PAGASA said winds across Mindanao will generally be light to moderate from the south to southwest.
Coastal waters in most areas are forecast to remain slight to moderate, with wave conditions generally ranging from 0.6 to 1.8 meters.
The exception is Camiguin, where moderate to strong southwesterly winds and moderate to rough seas are expected. This could result in more challenging conditions for small boats and other coastal activities.
Residents urged to remain alert
While the regional forecast does not indicate continuous heavy rain across the entire island, PAGASA’s warning on severe thunderstorms underscores the possibility of sudden, localized weather disturbances.
Thunderstorms can develop rapidly and may produce intense rainfall over a short period, potentially causing flooding in low-lying areas and landslides in vulnerable slopes.
Residents, motorists, commuters, farmers and communities in flood- and landslide-prone areas are therefore advised to monitor succeeding PAGASA advisories and local disaster risk reduction and management office alerts, particularly when thunderstorms develop nearby.
The forecast is valid from 5 a.m. Thursday, August 13, until 5 a.m. Friday, August 14, 2026, and may be updated as weather conditions evolve.
