DAVAO CITY — Most parts of Mindanao will continue to experience unsettled weather from Friday, January 23 until early Saturday, January 24, as the Northeast Monsoon (Amihan) and localized thunderstorms affect large portions of the island, according to the latest regional weather forecast issued by Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

In its 5:00 a.m. bulletin, PAGASA said Caraga Region and Misamis Oriental will have cloudy skies with light rains due to the prevailing Northeast Monsoon. The rest of Northern Mindanao is expected to experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains, also influenced by Amihan.

Meanwhile, most other areas in Mindanao, including the Zamboanga Peninsula, Davao Region, SOCCSKSARGEN, and BARMM, will see partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms brought about by localized weather systems. PAGASA warned that severe thunderstorms may trigger flash floods or landslides, especially in low-lying and mountainous areas.

Strong to Gale Winds, Dangerous Sea Conditions

PAGASA further cautioned that strong to gale-force winds from the northeast will prevail over the eastern sections of Mindanao, including parts of Davao Region and Caraga, resulting in rough to very rough seas ranging from 2.8 to 4.5 meters. Small seacraft operators and fishermen are strongly advised not to venture out to sea, particularly along eastern coastal areas.

Over the rest of Mindanao, moderate to strong northeast winds will dominate, with moderate to rough sea conditions measuring 1.2 to 2.8 meters. Coastal communities are urged to remain vigilant, especially during periods of intensified winds.

Regional Weather Highlights

In the Zamboanga Peninsula, including Zamboanga City, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay, and Isabela City, weather will range from partly cloudy to cloudy with rainshowers or thunderstorms, accompanied by moderate to strong northeast winds and moderate to rough coastal waters. Temperatures across the region may range from around 20°C to as high as 36°C.

Across Northern Mindanao, provinces such as Bukidnon, Camiguin, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental, and Misamis Oriental will generally experience cloudy to partly cloudy skies with rainshowers or thunderstorms. Misamis Oriental, in particular, is expected to have cloudy skies with more frequent rainshowers and thunderstorms. Temperatures in the region may range between 18°C and 33°C.

In the Davao Region, including Metro Davao, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao Oriental, Davao de Oro, and Davao Occidental, weather conditions remain unsettled with rainshowers or thunderstorms. Strong to gale winds are forecast over Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao Oriental, and Davao de Oro, along with rough to very rough seas along coastal areas. Temperatures may range from 20°C to 34°C.

For SOCCSKSARGEN, including North Cotabato, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, and Sarangani, residents can expect partly cloudy to cloudy skies with occasional thunderstorms, moderate to strong winds, and temperatures reaching up to 35°C.

In BARMM, covering Cotabato City, Basilan, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao del Norte, Maguindanao del Sur, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi, similar weather conditions will prevail, with intermittent rainshowers or thunderstorms, moderate to strong northeast winds, and moderate to rough seas in coastal areas.

Public Advisory

PAGASA urged local disaster risk reduction and management offices to stay on alert, particularly in flood- and landslide-prone areas, as weather conditions may rapidly worsen during thunderstorms. The public is advised to monitor official weather updates and advisories, especially those living in coastal and mountainous communities.
