EL SALVADOR CITY, Misamis Oriental — Most areas across Mindanao are expected to experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or localized thunderstorms over the next 24 hours, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) Mindanao Regional Services Division (MINPRSD).

In its regional weather forecast issued at 5:00 a.m. on August 17, 2026, PAGASA said the forecast is valid from 5:00 a.m. Monday until 5:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 18.

The weather agency cautioned that severe thunderstorms could trigger flash floods or landslides, particularly in areas that receive heavy rainfall in a short period.

PAGASA advised communities in vulnerable areas, including those near rivers, waterways, steep slopes and other landslide-prone locations, to remain alert to rapidly changing weather conditions.

Rainshowers and thunderstorms expected across Mindanao

The forecast indicates a generally similar weather pattern across the major regions of Mindanao, with partly cloudy skies becoming cloudy at times and accompanied by rainshowers or thunderstorms.

In the Zamboanga Peninsula, Zamboanga City, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay and Isabela City are all expected to experience partly cloudy to occasionally cloudy conditions with rainshowers or thunderstorms.

Temperatures in the area are forecast to range from 24°C to 35°C, depending on the locality and period of the forecast.

In Northern Mindanao, Bukidnon, Camiguin, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental and Misamis Oriental are likewise expected to experience rainshowers or thunderstorms.

Bukidnon is forecast to have temperatures ranging from 20°C to 33°C, while temperatures in the other provinces are expected to reach the low to mid-30s.

The Davao Region is also expected to remain partly cloudy to cloudy at times, with rainshowers or thunderstorms possible in Metro Davao, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao Oriental, Davao de Oro and Davao Occidental.

Forecast temperatures across the region are generally expected to reach 31°C to 34°C during the warmer period.

SOCCSKSARGEN and Caraga also under thunderstorm watch

In SOCCSKSARGEN, North Cotabato, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat and Sarangani are expected to experience similar conditions, with partly cloudy skies becoming cloudy at times and possible rainshowers or thunderstorms.

Temperatures are forecast to reach as high as 34°C, with Sarangani expected to range from 26°C to 32°C.

The Caraga Region is also expected to see partly cloudy to cloudy skies with rainshowers or thunderstorms in Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur and the Dinagat Islands.

Surigao del Norte could reach 35°C, while other areas in the region are generally expected to experience maximum temperatures between 34°C and 35°C.

BARMM areas may also experience thunderstorms

Across the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), Cotabato City, Basilan, Lanao del Sur, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, Maguindanao del Norte and Maguindanao del Sur are likewise expected to have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with rainshowers or thunderstorms.

Forecast temperatures range from the low 20s to the mid-30s, with the highest temperatures reaching around 34°C in several areas.

Sulu and Tawi-Tawi are forecast to reach 33°C, while Lanao del Sur could see temperatures ranging from 23°C to 31°C.

Winds and coastal conditions

PAGASA said light to moderate winds from the south to southwest will prevail over Mindanao.

For coastal areas where sea conditions were specified, slight to moderate seas with wave heights of 0.6 to 1.8 meters are expected.

The combination of thunderstorms and prevailing winds means conditions at sea may change during the passage of localized thunderstorms. Fisherfolk, boat operators and other coastal communities are advised to remain attentive to weather updates and local advisories before heading out to sea.

PAGASA’s forecast covers the provinces and major areas under the Mindanao Regional Services Division, with conditions subject to change as thunderstorms develop locally.

Residents are urged to monitor official PAGASA bulletins and advisories, particularly during periods of darkening skies, heavy rain, strong winds or thunder and lightning.

The weather agency’s warning on possible flash floods and landslides is particularly important for communities in low-lying, flood-prone and mountainous areas, where localized heavy rainfall can rapidly increase hazards even when widespread severe weather is not forecast.

The next regional weather forecast is expected to provide updated conditions as PAGASA continues monitoring the weather situation across Mindanao.
