ZAMBOANGA CITY — Authorities seized more than P3 million worth of alleged smuggled cigarettes during an interception operation in Barangay Ayala, Zamboanga City, on August 24, 2026.
Personnel of the 2nd Zamboanga City Mobile Force Company (2nd ZCMFC) “Seaborne” reportedly intercepted the shipment after receiving information that suspected smugglers were unloading a large quantity of cigarettes from a banca in Zone 5, Barangay Ayala.
Police personnel moved to the area and caught the alleged illegal activity in progress, leading to the confiscation of the cigarette shipment.
Two individuals were reportedly seen allegedly unloading the cigarettes from the banca when the police operation was conducted. The two were taken into custody for investigation and possible filing of appropriate charges.
The confiscated cigarettes were estimated to have a street value of more than P3 million, although authorities are expected to conduct further inventory and verification to establish the exact quantity, brands and total value of the seized items.
The operation highlights continuing efforts by law enforcement authorities in Zamboanga City to curb the movement of illicit tobacco products through coastal and maritime routes. Smugglers have historically used small boats and other watercraft to transport untaxed or illegally imported cigarettes into various areas, making coastal communities potential entry and unloading points.
The seized cigarettes and the banca used in the operation were placed under police custody and are expected to be subjected to proper documentation and further examination.
Authorities are also expected to determine the origin of the shipment, its intended destination and the identities of other individuals who may have been involved in the alleged smuggling operation.
The two apprehended suspects could face charges under applicable laws governing the illegal importation, possession, distribution or transportation of tobacco products, depending on the findings of the investigation and the evidence gathered by authorities.
Police officials continue to urge residents, particularly those living in coastal communities, to report suspicious maritime activities and the movement of large quantities of untaxed or undocumented cigarettes to law enforcement agencies.
The latest seizure comes amid sustained enforcement operations against cigarette smuggling in Mindanao, where authorities have intensified efforts to prevent illicit tobacco products from entering local markets and depriving the government of legitimate tax revenues.
Authorities emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing and that the allegations against the two suspects will be subject to the appropriate legal proceedings.
