DAVAO CITY – Large portions of Mindanao are expected to experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers and thunderstorms over the next 24 hours, according to the latest regional weather forecast issued by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) Mindanao Regional Services Division on Wednesday, June 17.

The weather advisory, issued at 5:00 a.m., remains valid until 5:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 18.

PAGASA said the provinces of Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, and Davao Oriental will be directly affected by easterlies, or warm winds coming from the Pacific Ocean, resulting in partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers and thunderstorms.

Meanwhile, the rest of Mindanao will experience similar weather conditions due to localized thunderstorms, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours.

Forecasters warned residents to remain vigilant as severe thunderstorms may trigger flash floods and landslides, especially in low-lying, flood-prone, and mountainous areas.

“Possible flash floods or landslides may occur during severe thunderstorms,” PAGASA stated in its advisory.

Warm Temperatures Expected Across Mindanao

Despite the likelihood of scattered rainfall, most provinces are expected to experience warm to hot daytime temperatures.

Agusan del Norte is forecast to record the highest temperature in Mindanao at 36 degrees Celsius, followed by Davao del Norte, Davao de Oro, Agusan del Sur, and several other provinces that could reach up to 35 degrees Celsius.

Metro Davao, North Cotabato, Cotabato City, Zamboanga City, Misamis Occidental, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, and Davao Oriental are expected to see daytime temperatures ranging from 32°C to 34°C.

Cooler temperatures are anticipated in upland areas, particularly in Bukidnon, where temperatures may drop to as low as 20°C.

Rain Showers Possible Across All Regions

The forecast covers all major Mindanao regions, including the Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, Davao Region, SOCCSKSARGEN, Caraga Region, and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

In the Zamboanga Peninsula, including Zamboanga City, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay, and Isabela City, residents can expect partly cloudy skies becoming cloudy at times with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms.

Similar weather conditions are forecast in Northern Mindanao provinces such as Bukidnon, Camiguin, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental, and Misamis Oriental.

Across the Davao Region, including Davao City, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao Oriental, Davao de Oro, and Davao Occidental, isolated rain showers and thunderstorms may develop throughout the day and night.

The same weather pattern will prevail over SOCCSKSARGEN provinces, namely North Cotabato, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, and Sarangani, as well as the entire Caraga Region.

In BARMM, including Basilan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao del Norte, Maguindanao del Sur, and Cotabato City, residents should likewise expect intermittent rain showers and thunderstorms.

Sea Conditions Remain Favorable

PAGASA reported that winds across Mindanao will generally be light to moderate, blowing from the east to northeast.

Sea conditions along the coasts are expected to remain slight to moderate, with wave heights ranging from 0.6 to 1.2 meters, making them generally favorable for small fishing vessels and sea travel. However, mariners are still advised to exercise caution when thunderstorms occur, as sudden gusts and rougher seas may develop.

Public Advised to Stay Alert

PAGASA urged the public, particularly those living near rivers, coastal communities, and landslide-prone areas, to monitor weather updates and take precautionary measures as thunderstorms can rapidly intensify.

Local disaster risk reduction and management offices are also advised to remain on alert for possible weather-related incidents, especially in areas that have recently experienced heavy rainfall.

The weather bureau continues to monitor atmospheric conditions affecting Mindanao and encouraged residents to stay informed through official PAGASA advisories and local government announcements.
