Camp Siongco, Maguindanao del Norte — May 16, 2025 — Two soldiers of the 33rd Infantry (Makabayan) Battalion were awarded the Wounded Personnel Medal in recognition of their bravery and sacrifice while fulfilling election-related duties in Maguindanao del Sur.

2nd Lieutenant Kent Carreon and Corporal Kevin Galanza received the commendation from Major General Donald M. Gumiran, Commander of the 6th Infantry (Kampilan) Division, during a ceremony held at the Camp Siongco Station Hospital, where the soldiers are currently recovering from injuries sustained in an armed attack.

The two were wounded in action during a visibility patrol in Barangay Kuloy, Shariff Aguak, when unidentified armed individuals ambushed their team. The patrol was part of security operations for the recently concluded national and local elections.

The Wounded Personnel Medal is awarded to military personnel who are injured in the line of duty, particularly in the defense of the country or in the fulfillment of a mission under hazardous conditions.

Major General Gumiran lauded the courage and commitment of Carreon and Galanza, saying their actions reflect the steadfast dedication of Filipino soldiers to protect democratic processes despite threats to security.

“Their bravery serves as a reminder of the sacrifices our troops make every day to ensure that the voice of every Filipino is heard during elections, no matter the risks involved,” said Gumiran.

The Joint Task Force (JTF) Central emphasized that ensuring safe and fair elections in conflict-affected areas like Maguindanao del Sur requires not only military readiness but also immense personal courage from uniformed personnel.

The commendation of the wounded soldiers is a testament to the Philippine Army’s continued resolve to uphold peace, order, and democratic integrity in the face of adversity.
