Mayor Ampatuan Denies His Camp’s Involvement in Violence in Shariff Aguak; Residents Refute Claims

Shariff Aguak, Maguindanao del Sur—Mayor Datu Akmad “Mitra” Ampatuan firmly denied allegations that his camp was responsible for the recent violence in Talayan, Maguindanao del Sur. The altercation took place during the filing of candidacy by Hadji Datu Ali Midtimbang, resulting in one fatality and five individuals injured.

In a press conference, Mayor Ampatuan explained that the trouble started when a group of men attacked a member of the Barangay Peacekeeping Action Team (BPAT), who was stationed to monitor the area. According to the mayor, the BPAT member sustained serious injuries and later succumbed to his wounds.

However, residents who witnessed the incident have contradicted the mayor’s account. They claimed that supporters of Mayor Ampatuan were waiting for Midtimbang’s convoy and, without hesitation, began throwing stones and harassing those in the convoy. They further alleged that the mayor’s supporters were armed with sharp objects, contributing to the tense and violent atmosphere.

In response to the violence, Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief General Rommel Francisco Marbil has ordered an increased police presence in Shariff Aguak and neighboring areas. The directive aims to prevent further unrest, especially as the 2025 elections draw near.

Authorities are conducting a deeper investigation into the incident, while the local community remains on edge, hoping for peace and resolution in the coming months.
