In a move to solidify its status as a top adventure destination, the House of Representatives has approved on second reading House Bill No. 11108, authored by Cagayan de Oro 1st District Representative Lordan Suan. The bill seeks to officially designate Cagayan de Oro as the “Whitewater Rafting Capital of the Philippines.”

Boosting Tourism and Economic Growth

The legislation, which highlights the city’s renowned whitewater rafting experiences, is expected to enhance tourism, strengthen the local economy, and inspire further development of outdoor adventure activities in the area. According to Bert Amplayo, spokesperson for Representative Suan, the city’s whitewater rafting activities attracted over 20,000 tourists annually before the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted travel.

“This initiative will not only promote Cagayan de Oro on the national and international stage but also help improve the lives of its residents by creating more tourism-related opportunities,” Amplayo said.

Recognizing Cagayan de Oro’s Unique Appeal

Cagayan de Oro has long been a favorite destination for thrill-seekers, offering year-round rafting adventures on the Cagayan River. With the passage of this bill, the city will gain a prestigious title that reflects its natural beauty and adrenaline-pumping activities. The Department of Tourism will include Cagayan de Oro in its national and regional promotional programs, ensuring wider recognition among both local and foreign tourists.

A Step Closer to Becoming Law

The bill has received strong support in the House of Representatives, with multiple legislators co-sponsoring the initiative. Its approval on second reading brings it closer to becoming law. Once enacted, it will pave the way for Cagayan de Oro to further enhance its reputation as a premier adventure destination in the Philippines.

Representative Suan emphasized the importance of this recognition, stating, “This title cements Cagayan de Oro’s position as a leader in adventure tourism. It’s not just a win for our city but also for the country’s tourism industry.”

Next Steps

The bill now awaits final approval in the House before moving to the Senate for deliberation. Once passed into law, it will take effect 15 days after publication in the Official Gazette or a newspaper of general circulation.

Cagayan de Oro residents and adventure enthusiasts alike are optimistic that this legislative move will usher in a new era of growth and opportunity for the city, making it a shining beacon for adventure tourism in the Philippines.
