SIASI, Sulu — A potentially critical disruption to the delivery of humanitarian assistance was averted after the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) successfully rescued a distressed motor launch carrying approximately 1,900 sacks of rice intended for relief distribution in the Municipality of Pandami, Sulu.
The rescue operation, carried out by the Coast Guard Sub-Station (CGSS) Siasi under the supervision of Station Commander CDR Al-Hafidz T. Bih PCG of the Coast Guard Station Western Sulu, highlighted the crucial role of the Coast Guard in ensuring not only maritime safety but also the uninterrupted delivery of essential aid to island communities.
The incident occurred on July 18, when the M/L SUPER INN encountered engine trouble while traversing the waters near Tiyumabal Island, Pandami, Sulu.
Distress Call Sparks Immediate Response
According to the Philippine Coast Guard, at around 5:55 p.m., CGSS Siasi received a distress call from Mr. Almujib Asula, captain of M/L SUPER INN, reporting that the vessel had suffered an engine failure while sailing from Maimbung, Sulu to Pandami, Sulu.
The vessel was transporting around 1,900 sacks of rice, a vital cargo intended to support relief operations in Pandami. With strong sea currents threatening to push the disabled vessel toward the shoreline, the captain immediately dropped anchor to stabilize the motor launch while waiting for emergency assistance.
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Coast Guard personnel immediately activated their Search and Rescue (SAR) protocol.
Coordinated Rescue at Sea
At approximately 7:15 p.m., CGSS Siasi mobilized its Search and Rescue Team and coordinated with the owner of M/L Fatima Sharifa-1, which was tapped to assist in towing the disabled vessel.
Just twenty minutes later, at 7:35 p.m., the rescue team departed aboard the response vessel and headed toward the reported location.
Despite challenging nighttime conditions and the prevailing sea currents, the Coast Guard successfully located the stranded motor launch in the waters off Tiyumabal Island.
By 12:25 a.m. on July 19, rescuers had reached the scene and immediately initiated towing operations. Around 1:00 a.m., the convoy safely departed the area, with M/L SUPER INN securely under tow toward Pandami.
After several hours of careful navigation, the vessels safely arrived in Pandami at approximately 7:00 a.m.
Cargo Preserved, Mission Continues
Upon arrival, Coast Guard personnel conducted an initial investigation into the incident and advised the vessel’s captain to file a Marine Protest, a standard maritime procedure documenting the circumstances surrounding the mechanical failure.
Most importantly, the successful rescue ensured that the cargo of relief rice reached its intended destination without being lost to the sea or delayed indefinitely—preventing what could have become a significant logistical setback for humanitarian efforts in the municipality.
The operation also prevented the disabled vessel from drifting ashore, where rough currents could have caused structural damage, cargo loss, or environmental hazards.

For many island municipalities in Sulu, maritime transport remains the primary means of delivering food supplies, humanitarian assistance, and other essential commodities.
