ZAMBOANGA CITY / DAVAO CITY – Most parts of Mindanao will experience cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms over the next 24 hours as the Trough of a Low Pressure Area (LPA) and easterlies continue to affect the region, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said in its latest regional forecast issued at 5:00 a.m. on January 7, 2026.

PAGASA warned that Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi are likely to experience cloudy skies with scattered to widespread rains and thunderstorms due to the trough of the LPA. The weather bureau cautioned residents in these areas of possible flash floods and landslides, especially in low-lying and mountainous communities, as moderate to at times heavy rains may occur.

“The public, particularly those living near rivers, slopes, and coastal areas, are advised to remain vigilant as rainfall may trigger flooding and landslides,” PAGASA said.

Rest of Mindanao: Isolated Rains, Thunderstorms Possible

For the rest of Mindanao—including Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, Davao Region, SOCCSKSARGEN, Caraga, and BARMM mainland provinces—weather conditions will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms caused by the prevailing easterlies.

While most areas will only experience brief rains, PAGASA noted that severe thunderstorms may still result in localized flooding or landslides, particularly in flood-prone and upland communities.

Zamboanga Peninsula

Residents of Zamboanga City, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay, and Isabela City can expect partly cloudy to at times cloudy skies with rainshowers or thunderstorms. Winds will be light to moderate from the northeast to north, with slight to moderate coastal conditions. Temperatures across the peninsula will range from 22°C to 33°C.

Northern Mindanao

In Bukidnon, Camiguin, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental, and Misamis Oriental, similar conditions will prevail—partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms. Winds will be light to moderate, and seas along coastal areas will be slight to moderate. Temperatures are expected to range from 21°C to 32°C.

Davao Region

The Davao Region, including Metro Davao, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao de Oro, Davao Oriental, and Davao Occidental, will also experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with rainshowers or thunderstorms.

However, PAGASA warned that Davao del Sur, Davao Oriental, and Davao Occidental may experience moderate to strong winds and moderate to rough coastal waters, making sea travel risky. Fisherfolk and small seacraft operators are advised to avoid venturing out to sea during rough conditions. Temperatures in the region will range from 21°C to 33°C.

SOCCSKSARGEN

In North Cotabato, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, and Sarangani, weather will remain partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms. Winds will be light to moderate, and coastal waters will be slight to moderate. Daytime temperatures may reach up to 33°C.

Caraga Region

The provinces of Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, and Dinagat Islands will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with rainshowers and thunderstorms. PAGASA noted that winds in these areas may be moderate to strong, with moderate to rough seas along the eastern seaboard. Temperatures will range from 21°C to 32°C.

BARMM Areas

In the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi will continue to be affected by the LPA trough, bringing cloudy skies with frequent rainshowers and thunderstorms. These provinces face the highest risk of flooding and landslides.

Meanwhile, Cotabato City, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao del Norte, and Maguindanao del Sur will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms. Winds will be light to moderate, and coastal waters will be slight to moderate.

Wind and Sea Conditions

Across Mindanao, winds will generally blow from the northeast to north at light to moderate speeds, but may become moderate to strong in eastern and southern coastal areas. Sea conditions will range from slight to moderate (0.6 to 2.5 meters), becoming moderate to rough in areas with stronger winds.

Public Advisory

PAGASA urged local government units, disaster risk reduction offices, and residents to monitor weather updates closely, prepare for possible flooding and landslides, and take precautions during thunderstorms.

“Small fishing boats and other seacraft are advised to exercise caution or avoid sailing in areas with rough seas,” the agency added.
