DAVAO CITY — Cloudy skies, scattered rains, and possible flooding are expected across several parts of Mindanao as a trough of a low-pressure area (LPA) and prevailing easterlies continue to influence the region, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Tuesday.

In its Regional Weather Forecast issued at 5:00 a.m. on January 6, 2026, PAGASA’s Mindanao office said the trough of the LPA is directly affecting the Zamboanga Peninsula, Basilan, and Tawi-Tawi, bringing cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms. Moderate to at times heavy rains in these areas may trigger flash floods and landslides, especially in low-lying and mountainous communities.

“The public, particularly residents near rivers and slopes, are advised to remain alert for possible flooding and landslides,” PAGASA warned.

Zamboanga Peninsula, Basilan, Tawi-Tawi under rain threat

Zamboanga City, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay, and Isabela City are forecast to experience cloudy skies with frequent rainshowers and thunderstorms throughout the day and into the night. Daytime temperatures in these areas may reach up to 33°C, while nighttime lows may drop to around 23–25°C.

Similarly, Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) will also see persistent cloudy skies with rainshowers and thunderstorms, with temperatures ranging from 21°C to 32°C. Coastal waters in these areas are expected to be slight to moderate, posing risks to small fishing vessels during thunderstorms.

Easterlies affect most of Mindanao

The rest of Mindanao will be influenced by easterlies, resulting in partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms, particularly in the afternoon or evening.

In Northern Mindanao, including Bukidnon, Camiguin, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental, and Misamis Oriental, residents can expect warm and humid conditions with temperatures reaching up to 32°C. Isolated thunderstorms may still cause localized flooding, PAGASA said.

Metro Davao and the provinces of Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao Occidental, and Davao de Oro will also experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with occasional rainshowers or thunderstorms. Temperatures in the Davao Region may climb to 32°C during the day. However, coastal and eastern sections, particularly Davao Oriental and Davao de Oro, will experience moderate to strong winds from the northeast to north.

Rough seas in eastern Mindanao, Caraga

PAGASA warned of moderate to strong winds and moderate to rough seas over the eastern sections of Mindanao, including Davao Oriental, Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, and Dinagat Islands. Wave heights in these areas may reach between 1.8 and 3.5 meters.

“Sea travel is risky for small seacraft, especially in eastern coastal areas,” PAGASA said, advising fishermen and operators of small vessels to exercise caution or avoid sailing when thunderstorms are present.

Elsewhere, including SOCCSKSARGEN provinces such as North Cotabato, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, and Sarangani, winds will be light to moderate with slight to moderate seas, ranging from 0.6 to 2.1 meters.

BARMM, SOCCSKSARGEN to remain alert

Cotabato City, Maguindanao del Norte, Maguindanao del Sur, and Lanao del Sur will have generally fair to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms due to easterlies. While widespread flooding is not expected, PAGASA noted that severe thunderstorms could still cause localized flash floods.

The forecast remains valid until 5:00 a.m. on January 7, 2026. PAGASA urged the public and local disaster risk reduction offices to continue monitoring official weather bulletins, especially in areas prone to flooding, landslides, and rough seas.

For updates and advisories, PAGASA advised the public to visit its official website or contact its Mindanao forecasting center.
