CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — Most parts of Mindanao are expected to experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or localized thunderstorms over the next 24 hours, with the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) warning of possible flash floods and landslides in areas affected by severe thunderstorms.
In its Regional Weather Forecast for Mindanao (MINPRSD) issued at 5:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 9, 2026, PAGASA said the forecast is valid from 5:00 a.m. Wednesday until 5:00 a.m. Thursday, September 10.
The weather agency said rainshowers or thunderstorms may develop intermittently across the region, although conditions may vary from partly cloudy to cloudy at different times of the day.
PAGASA particularly cautioned communities in vulnerable areas to remain alert for possible flash floods and landslides due to severe thunderstorms.
The warning is especially relevant for communities living near rivers, creeks and other waterways, as well as those in low-lying and mountainous areas where intense rainfall from thunderstorms can rapidly increase water levels or trigger slope failures.
Southwesterly winds, moderate seas
Winds across Mindanao are expected to remain light to moderate and generally coming from the south to southwest.
Coastal waters are forecast to be slight to moderate, with wave heights generally ranging from 0.6 to 2.1 meters.
The prevailing conditions may allow some maritime activities to continue, but boat operators and coastal communities are still advised to monitor weather developments, particularly when thunderstorms form over or near coastal waters.
Temperatures to reach 36°C in parts of Mindanao
Temperatures across the region will remain generally warm despite the possibility of rainshowers and thunderstorms.
Among the areas covered by the forecast, Maguindanao del Sur is expected to record one of the highest temperatures, reaching 36°C during the forecast period.
Davao del Norte may reach 35°C, while Davao de Oro, Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Dinagat Islands, Sulu and Maguindanao del Norte may reach highs of around 35°C.
Other areas are expected to experience maximum temperatures generally between 32°C and 34°C.
The relatively warm conditions combined with atmospheric instability may contribute to the development of localized thunderstorms, particularly during periods of stronger daytime heating.
Weather outlook by area
In Zamboanga Peninsula, including Zamboanga City, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay and Isabela City, partly cloudy to at times cloudy skies with rainshowers or thunderstorms are expected. Temperatures may range from 24°C to 34°C, depending on the locality and time of day.
Across Northern Mindanao, Bukidnon is forecast to experience temperatures between 21°C and 32°C, while Camiguin, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental and Misamis Oriental may reach highs of 34°C. Rainshowers or thunderstorms are possible in most areas.
In the Davao Region, Metro Davao and Davao del Sur may reach 34°C, while Davao del Norte and Davao de Oro could climb to 35°C. Davao Occidental is expected to remain slightly cooler, with temperatures reaching up to 32°C.
For SOCCSKSARGEN, North Cotabato may reach 34°C, while South Cotabato is forecast at up to 33°C. Sultan Kudarat and Sarangani may reach 34°C and 33°C, respectively. All areas remain susceptible to isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms.
In Caraga, temperatures may reach 35°C in Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte and Dinagat Islands. Surigao del Sur could record the highest forecast maximum in the region at 36°C. Rainshowers or thunderstorms remain possible across the area.
For the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), Cotabato City may reach 33°C, Basilan 34°C, Lanao del Sur 32°C, Sulu 35°C, Tawi-Tawi 34°C, Maguindanao del Norte 35°C, and Maguindanao del Sur 36°C.
Most BARMM areas are likewise expected to experience partly cloudy to at times cloudy skies with rainshowers or thunderstorms.
Public urged to remain weather-ready
PAGASA’s forecast underscores the possibility that generally fair or partly cloudy conditions could quickly shift to thunderstorms in localized areas.
Residents are therefore advised to remain alert to weather advisories, particularly when dark clouds, strong winds, lightning or heavy rainfall develop.
Motorists should exercise caution when traveling during sudden downpours because reduced visibility and water accumulation on roads can create hazardous driving conditions.
Communities in flood- and landslide-prone locations are likewise encouraged to closely monitor local advisories and be prepared to move to safer areas if conditions deteriorate.
Farmers, fishermen and other outdoor workers should also consider the possibility of sudden thunderstorms when planning activities.
For coastal communities and sea travelers, PAGASA’s forecast of slight to moderate seas with waves of 0.6 to 2.1 meters means conditions may remain manageable in many areas, but sudden thunderstorms can still bring abrupt changes in wind and sea conditions.
PAGASA’s MINPRSD advised the public to obtain the latest weather information through official PAGASA channels as conditions can change rapidly, especially with the development of localized thunderstorms.
The forecast remains valid until 5:00 a.m. Thursday, September 10, 2026.
