MINDANAO — Large parts of Mindanao are expected to experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers and localized thunderstorms over the next 24 hours, with the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) warning that severe thunderstorms could trigger flash floods and landslides in vulnerable areas.
The Mindanao Regional Weather Forecast issued by PAGASA’s Mindanao PRSD at 5:00 a.m. on September 8, 2026 is valid until 5:00 a.m. on September 9. The agency identified localized thunderstorms as the prevailing weather condition affecting the island.
PAGASA said the forecast covers virtually all major areas of Mindanao, including the Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, the Davao Region, SOCCSKSARGEN, Caraga and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).
The weather agency advised communities to remain alert, particularly during periods of severe thunderstorms, because intense rainfall can rapidly produce flooding and landslides, especially in low-lying, flood-prone and mountainous areas.
Across the Zamboanga Peninsula, including Zamboanga City, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay and Isabela City, partly cloudy to at times cloudy skies with rainshowers or thunderstorms are forecast both during the day and overnight.
Daytime temperatures are expected to range from 24°C to 35°C, depending on the locality, before dropping to between 24°C and 33°C overnight. Winds are forecast to be light to moderate from the south to southwest, with slight to moderate coastal waters.
In Northern Mindanao, similar conditions are expected across Bukidnon, Camiguin, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental and Misamis Oriental.
Bukidnon is forecast to see temperatures between 19°C and 32°C during the day, easing to 19°C to 30°C overnight. Camiguin could reach 36°C during the daytime, while Misamis Oriental could climb to 35°C. Lanao del Norte is expected to remain cooler, with temperatures ranging from 21°C to 33°C during the day.
The Davao Region will likewise remain under partly cloudy to cloudy conditions, with rainshowers or thunderstorms possible during both daytime and nighttime hours.
Davao del Norte could reach 36°C, making it one of the warmer areas in the forecast, while Davao del Sur is expected to reach 35°C. Metro Davao is forecast to register temperatures between 26°C and 33°C, while Davao Oriental could reach up to 32°C. Davao de Oro is expected to reach 35°C, while Davao Occidental could reach 34°C.
For SOCCSKSARGEN, partly cloudy to at times cloudy skies accompanied by rainshowers or thunderstorms are forecast throughout the period.
North Cotabato could see temperatures from 24°C to 34°C, while South Cotabato is forecast at 22°C to 33°C during the day. Sultan Kudarat may reach 34°C, while Sarangani could climb to 35°C. Overnight temperatures are expected to fall to between 30°C and 33°C across these areas.
The Caraga Region is also expected to experience widespread chances of rainshowers and thunderstorms.
Agusan del Norte is forecast to reach 35°C, while Agusan del Sur could reach 36°C. Surigao del Norte is expected to range from 25°C to 36°C, and Surigao del Sur from 24°C to 35°C. Dinagat Islands could see temperatures reaching 35°C during the day.
In the BARMM, PAGASA forecasts similar unsettled conditions across Cotabato City, Basilan, Lanao del Sur, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, Maguindanao del Norte and Maguindanao del Sur.
Cotabato City is expected to reach 34°C, while Basilan could reach the same high. Lanao del Sur is forecast to range from 23°C to 32°C. Sulu and Tawi-Tawi could reach 35°C and 34°C, respectively.
Maguindanao del Norte is forecast to reach 35°C, while Maguindanao del Sur could register temperatures as high as 36°C during the daytime.
Light to moderate winds, generally manageable seas
Despite the threat of thunderstorms, PAGASA forecasts light to moderate winds from the south to southwest across the region.
For areas where coastal conditions were specified, seas are expected to remain slight to moderate, with wave heights of about 0.6 to 2.1 meters.
However, the possibility of thunderstorms remains an important consideration for people travelling or working at sea. Sudden thunderstorms can bring abrupt changes in weather conditions, including heavier rainfall and stronger winds.
Public urged to remain weather-aware
With thunderstorms forecast across much of Mindanao, residents are advised to closely monitor local weather developments, particularly when dark clouds build up or thunderstorms become persistent.
Communities in areas susceptible to flooding and landslides should exercise particular caution during periods of heavy or prolonged rainfall. PAGASA specifically warned of the possibility of flash floods and landslides due to severe thunderstorms.
The forecast underscores the importance of staying alert even in areas that begin the day with partly cloudy skies, as conditions may shift to cloudy skies with rainshowers or thunderstorms later in the day or overnight.
