Several areas across Mindanao are expected to experience rainy and stormy conditions on Thursday, September 24, as the trough of a tropical depression continues to influence portions of the island, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) Mindanao Regional Services Division (MINPRSD).
In its 5:00 a.m. regional weather forecast issued September 24, PAGASA said Caraga, Davao Region and Sarangani will experience cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms due to the trough of the tropical depression.
The weather bureau warned that flash floods and landslides are possible in areas affected by moderate to at times heavy rainfall.
The rest of Mindanao will generally have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or localized thunderstorms. PAGASA also cautioned that flash floods or landslides may occur during severe thunderstorms, particularly in vulnerable and already saturated areas.
The forecast is valid from 5:00 a.m. Thursday until 5:00 a.m. Friday, September 25.
Caraga, Davao Face More Persistent Rain
The eastern and southeastern portions of Mindanao are expected to remain among the areas most affected by the weather disturbance.
Across Caraga, including Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur and Dinagat Islands, PAGASA forecasts cloudy skies with rainshowers and thunderstorms.
Temperatures are expected to range from 23°C to 34°C, depending on the province and time of day.
The Davao Region is likewise forecast to experience cloudy skies with rainshowers and thunderstorms. This includes Metro Davao, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao Oriental, Davao de Oro and Davao Occidental.
Forecast temperatures in the region range from 23°C to 33°C, with Davao Oriental expected to see temperatures between 23°C and 32°C.
Sarangani will also experience cloudy skies with rainshowers and thunderstorms, with temperatures ranging from 26°C to 33°C.
PAGASA’s broader daily weather bulletin likewise identifies the trough of the tropical depression as a weather influence over eastern sections of Mindanao, with possible flash floods or landslides where moderate to occasionally heavy rains occur.
Rain and Thunderstorms Also Possible in Western and Central Mindanao
Although Caraga and Davao Region are expected to receive more widespread rainfall, other parts of Mindanao are not expected to remain completely dry.
In the Zamboanga Peninsula, Zamboanga City, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay and Isabela City are forecast to experience partly cloudy skies becoming cloudy at times, with rainshowers or thunderstorms.
Temperatures are expected to reach 30°C to 34°C during the warmer part of the forecast period.
Northern Mindanao will also see generally unsettled weather. Bukidnon, Camiguin, Misamis Occidental and Misamis Oriental are expected to experience partly cloudy to at times cloudy skies with rainshowers or thunderstorms.
Lanao del Norte, meanwhile, is forecast to have cloudy skies with rainshowers and thunderstorms during the earlier portion of the forecast period before conditions become partly cloudy to cloudy at times later.
Forecast temperatures across Northern Mindanao range from around 20°C to 33°C, with Bukidnon remaining among the cooler areas.
SOCCSKSARGEN, BARMM Also Face Thunderstorm Risk
In SOCCSKSARGEN, North Cotabato, South Cotabato and Sultan Kudarat are forecast to have partly cloudy to at times cloudy skies with rainshowers or thunderstorms.
Sarangani will experience more persistent cloudy conditions with rainshowers and thunderstorms.
Temperatures across the region could reach 34°C, particularly during the daytime.
In the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), Cotabato City, Basilan, Lanao del Sur, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, Maguindanao del Norte and Maguindanao del Sur are generally expected to have partly cloudy skies becoming cloudy at times, with rainshowers or thunderstorms.
Temperatures are forecast to range from 23°C to 34°C across these areas.
Winds to Remain Light to Moderate
PAGASA said winds across the forecast areas will generally be light to moderate from the northeast to northwest.
Coastal waters are expected to remain slight to moderate, with wave heights generally ranging from 0.6 to 1.8 meters.
The conditions could still produce potentially hazardous situations for small boats, particularly during thunderstorms when winds can become stronger and weather conditions can deteriorate rapidly.
Flash Floods, Landslides Remain Key Hazards
PAGASA’s warning for possible flash floods and landslides is particularly significant for communities near rivers, steep slopes, mountainous areas and locations with poor drainage.
Localized thunderstorms can produce intense rainfall within a short period even when rainfall is not widespread across an entire province. Residents in flood-prone and landslide-prone communities are therefore urged to remain alert to changes in weather conditions and follow advisories issued by local authorities.
PAGASA’s current Mindanao regional information also indicates the potential for thunderstorms and moderate to occasionally heavy rainshowers in numerous parts of the island.
For commuters, motorists and communities in affected areas, sudden heavy rain may result in reduced visibility, slippery roads and localized flooding. Those traveling through mountainous or landslide-prone routes should exercise caution, particularly during periods of intense rainfall.
With the weather disturbance affecting portions of Mindanao, conditions may also change throughout the day as thunderstorms develop and move across different localities.
Residents are advised to continue monitoring official PAGASA bulletins, rainfall and thunderstorm warnings, and advisories from local disaster risk reduction and management offices.
