GENERAL SANTOS CITY, Philippines — Much of Mindanao will continue to experience cloudy skies, rainshowers and thunderstorms through Friday, September 25, as the trough of Tropical Cyclone Queenie influences weather conditions across the region, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) Mindanao Regional Services Division (MINPRSD).
In its 5:00 a.m. regional weather forecast issued September 25, PAGASA said Mindanao will generally experience cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms from 5:00 a.m. Friday until 5:00 a.m. Saturday.
The weather agency warned that moderate to at times heavy rains may trigger flash floods and landslides, particularly in areas vulnerable to flooding, steep terrain and soil instability.
Residents, motorists and local disaster response authorities are advised to remain alert for sudden changes in weather, especially during periods of persistent or intense rainfall.
Rainy and Stormy Conditions Across Western Mindanao
The Zamboanga Peninsula is expected to remain under generally cloudy conditions with rainshowers and thunderstorms during the morning and early part of the forecast period.
Zamboanga City and Zamboanga del Norte are forecast to record temperatures of 25°C to 31°C, while Zamboanga del Sur may see temperatures between 22°C and 30°C. Zamboanga Sibugay is expected to range from 23°C to 30°C, while Isabela City may experience temperatures of 26°C to 31°C.
By the succeeding period, conditions may become partly cloudy to at times cloudy, although rainshowers or thunderstorms may still occur.
Winds over these areas will generally be light to moderate from the northeast to northwest during the earlier period, shifting to southeast to southwest later. Coastal waters are expected to remain slight to moderate.
Northern Mindanao Also Faces Thunderstorms
In Northern Mindanao, Bukidnon, Camiguin, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental and Misamis Oriental are likewise expected to experience cloudy skies with rainshowers and thunderstorms.
Bukidnon will have temperatures ranging from 21°C to 29°C, rising to as high as 32°C during the succeeding period.
Camiguin is expected to range from 24°C to 28°C, while Lanao del Norte may experience 24°C to 29°C. Misamis Occidental is forecast at 25°C to 29°C, while Misamis Oriental may see temperatures between 24°C and 29°C.
The areas may experience a transition to partly cloudy skies, although rainshowers and thunderstorms will remain possible.
Davao Region to See Rainshowers and Thunderstorms
The Davao Region will also remain vulnerable to unsettled weather.
Metro Davao is forecast to experience cloudy skies with rainshowers and thunderstorms, with temperatures ranging from 25°C to 30°C during the first period and reaching up to 33°C later.
Davao del Norte may see temperatures of 24°C to 30°C, while Davao del Sur is forecast at 25°C to 30°C. Davao Oriental may experience 25°C to 29°C, while Davao de Oro is expected to range from 23°C to 30°C. Davao Occidental may see temperatures between 25°C and 29°C.
Winds in Davao del Sur, Davao Oriental and Davao Occidental are forecast to come from the south to southwest during the earlier period, while other areas may experience variable or northeasterly to northwesterly winds. Winds are expected to shift generally toward the southeast to southwest later.
Coastal waters across affected areas are forecast to remain slight to moderate.
SOCCSKSARGEN Areas Remain Under Rain Threat
In SOCCSKSARGEN, North Cotabato, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat and Sarangani are expected to experience cloudy skies accompanied by rainshowers and thunderstorms.
North Cotabato is forecast to record temperatures between 24°C and 31°C, with temperatures potentially reaching 34°C later in the forecast period.
South Cotabato may experience 24°C to 30°C, while Sultan Kudarat is expected to range from 23°C to 30°C. Sarangani may see temperatures between 25°C and 29°C during the earlier period and up to 32°C later.
The forecast calls for partly cloudy to at times cloudy skies during the succeeding period, but rainshowers and thunderstorms remain possible.
Caraga Braces for Continued Rainfall
The entire Caraga Region is also included in the area affected by the unsettled weather pattern.
Agusan del Norte is forecast to experience temperatures of 25°C to 30°C, while Agusan del Sur may range from 24°C to 29°C.
Surigao del Norte is expected to record 25°C to 30°C, while Surigao del Sur may experience 24°C to 30°C. Dinagat Islands is forecast to have temperatures between 26°C and 30°C.
All four areas are expected to experience cloudy skies with rainshowers and thunderstorms during the earlier period, followed by partly cloudy to at times cloudy conditions with possible rainshowers or thunderstorms.
BARMM Areas Also Included
Several areas of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao are likewise expected to experience unsettled weather.
Cotabato City is forecast to record temperatures of 23°C to 30°C, while Basilan may experience 25°C to 30°C.
Lanao del Sur is expected to be cooler, with temperatures ranging from 22°C to 27°C, while Sulu may experience 25°C to 29°C and Tawi-Tawi 26°C to 29°C during the first forecast period.
Maguindanao del Norte is expected to range from 24°C to 30°C, while Maguindanao del Sur may experience temperatures between 24°C and 31°C.
Temperatures in several BARMM areas could climb to 32°C to 34°C during the succeeding period despite the continued possibility of rainshowers and thunderstorms.
Seas Generally Slight to Moderate
PAGASA-MINPRSD said winds across Mindanao will generally remain light to moderate, initially coming from the northeast to northwest in many areas before shifting toward the southeast to southwest later in the forecast period.
The agency placed coastal waters at 0.6 to 1.8 meters, classified as slight to moderate.
The combination of rainshowers, thunderstorms and moderate seas may affect small fishing boats and other light vessels, particularly during periods of thunderstorms and sudden weather deterioration.
Public Urged to Monitor Local Advisories
PAGASA’s warning of possible flash floods and landslides is particularly important for communities located near rivers, waterways, low-lying areas and landslide-prone slopes.
Residents are advised to monitor official weather bulletins and local disaster risk reduction and management offices, especially when thunderstorms develop or rainfall becomes persistent.
Motorists should exercise caution on roads where heavy rain can rapidly reduce visibility and create slippery conditions, while communities near waterways should remain alert for sudden rises in water levels.
