MINDANAO — Several parts of Mindanao are expected to experience cloudy skies, rain showers and thunderstorms over the next 24 hours as the trough of a tropical depression continues to influence weather conditions over the region, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
In its Regional Weather Forecast for Mindanao (MINPRSD) issued at 5:00 a.m. on September 23, 2026, PAGASA said Caraga, Davao Region, Misamis Oriental, Bukidnon and Camiguin will experience cloudy skies accompanied by scattered rain showers, thunderstorms and lightning due to the trough of a tropical depression.
The weather bureau warned that moderate to occasionally heavy rainfall in these areas could trigger flooding and landslides, particularly in communities vulnerable to rain-induced hazards.
The forecast covers the period from 5:00 a.m. September 23 until 5:00 a.m. September 24, 2026.
Heavy rain risk in eastern and northern Mindanao
The provinces of Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur and Dinagat Islands in Caraga are forecast to experience cloudy skies with rain showers and thunderstorms.
Similar conditions are expected in Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao Oriental, Davao de Oro, Davao Occidental and Metro Davao, while Bukidnon, Camiguin and Misamis Oriental are also expected to remain cloudy with rain showers and thunderstorms.
These areas are among those directly identified by PAGASA as being affected by the trough of the tropical depression.
Temperatures may reach 34°C in some areas during the daytime, while overnight and early-morning temperatures could fall to around 20°C, particularly in Bukidnon.
Other parts of Mindanao may also see thunderstorms
PAGASA said the rest of Mindanao will generally experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers and thunderstorms caused by localized thunderstorms.
While rainfall may be more intermittent in these areas, the weather bureau cautioned that severe thunderstorms could still produce flooding or landslides, especially in areas that receive intense or prolonged rainfall.
This includes parts of the Zamboanga Peninsula, SOCCSKSARGEN and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).
In Zamboanga City, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay and Isabela City, partly cloudy to occasionally cloudy conditions with rain showers or thunderstorms are expected.
Similar conditions are forecast in North Cotabato, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat and Sarangani, as well as Cotabato City, Basilan, Lanao del Sur, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, Maguindanao del Norte and Maguindanao del Sur.
Temperatures and coastal conditions
Forecast temperatures across Mindanao will generally range from the low 20s to the mid-30s Celsius.
Among the areas listed in the forecast, Bukidnon is expected to record some of the lowest temperatures, ranging from 20°C to 29°C during the first forecast period and reaching up to 31°C the following day.
Meanwhile, several coastal areas could reach 34°C, including portions of Zamboanga, Caraga, Davao and BARMM.
Winds across Mindanao are expected to be light to moderate, generally coming from the northwest to southwest.
For coastal areas, PAGASA forecasts slight to moderate seas, with wave heights ranging from 0.6 to 1.8 meters.
Residents urged to monitor weather conditions
With thunderstorms and periods of potentially heavy rainfall expected, residents in flood- and landslide-prone communities are advised to remain alert, particularly during periods of persistent or intense rain.
Motorists and commuters should also exercise caution as sudden downpours may reduce visibility and cause water to accumulate along roads.
Communities near rivers, waterways and steep or unstable slopes should closely monitor local conditions and heed advisories from local disaster risk reduction and management offices.
PAGASA emphasized that weather conditions can change rapidly during thunderstorms. Residents are therefore encouraged to continue monitoring official weather bulletins and warnings, especially as the trough of the tropical depression affects portions of Mindanao.
