MINDANAO, Philippines — Most parts of Mindanao are expected to experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with rain showers and localized thunderstorms over the next 24 hours, with authorities warning residents of possible flash floods and landslides in areas affected by severe thunderstorms.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) Mindanao Regional Services Division (MINPRSD) issued the regional weather forecast at 5 a.m. on August 26, 2026, covering the period from 5 a.m. Wednesday until 5 a.m. Thursday.
According to PAGASA, the entire Mindanao region will generally experience partly cloudy to at times cloudy skies with rain showers or thunderstorms.
The weather agency cautioned that severe thunderstorms could trigger flash floods or landslides, particularly in vulnerable and low-lying communities, as well as areas near rivers, waterways and steep or unstable slopes.
The forecast calls for light to moderate winds from the south to southwest across most areas of Mindanao. Coastal waters are generally expected to be slight to moderate, ranging from 0.6 to 2.1 meters, although moderate coastal conditions are forecast in several areas of the Davao Region.
Western Mindanao
Across the Zamboanga Peninsula, Zamboanga City, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay and Isabela City are all expected to experience partly cloudy to cloudy conditions, with rain showers or thunderstorms possible.
Temperatures in the area are expected to range from 24°C to 35°C, depending on the locality and time of day. Winds will be light to moderate from the south to southwest, while coastal waters will remain slight to moderate.
Northern Mindanao
In Bukidnon, Camiguin, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental and Misamis Oriental, similar weather conditions are forecast, with partly cloudy to cloudy skies and possible rain showers or thunderstorms.
Bukidnon is expected to record temperatures of 19°C to 32°C, making it one of the cooler areas in the regional forecast.
Camiguin may see temperatures between 25°C and 34°C, while Lanao del Norte is expected to range from 24°C to 34°C. Misamis Occidental and Misamis Oriental could reach highs of around 34°C.
Davao Region
The Davao Region will also remain vulnerable to rain showers and thunderstorms, with Metro Davao, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur and Davao Oriental forecast to experience partly cloudy to at times cloudy skies.
Unlike most other areas, the Davao provinces are expected to experience moderate winds from the south to southwest, with moderate coastal waters.
Metro Davao is forecast to record temperatures of 26°C to 33°C, while Davao del Norte may range from 24°C to 33°C. Davao del Sur and Davao Oriental are expected to reach highs of about 33°C.
The same weather pattern is expected in Davao de Oro and Davao Occidental, based on the regional forecast issued Tuesday afternoon. Davao de Oro may experience temperatures of 23°C to 33°C, while Davao Occidental may range from 23°C to 32°C.
SOCCSKSARGEN
In North Cotabato, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat and Sarangani, residents should also prepare for intermittent rain showers and thunderstorms.
Temperatures are expected to range from 24°C to 34°C, with South Cotabato and Sarangani generally seeing slightly cooler conditions.
Winds will be light to moderate from the south to southwest, while coastal waters in the coastal provinces are expected to remain slight to moderate.
Caraga Region
The weather outlook for Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur and the Dinagat Islands likewise calls for partly cloudy to cloudy skies with rain showers or thunderstorms.
Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur could experience some of the region’s higher temperatures, reaching 35°C during the forecast period.
Coastal waters are expected to be slight to moderate, with temperatures generally ranging from the mid-20s to the mid-30s Celsius.
BARMM
The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao is also expected to experience the same unsettled weather pattern.
Cotabato City, Basilan, Lanao del Sur, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, Maguindanao del Norte and Maguindanao del Sur are all forecast to have partly cloudy to at times cloudy skies with rain showers or thunderstorms.
Temperatures could range from 21°C to 35°C, with Lanao del Sur expected to have the lowest minimum temperature at around 21°C.
Cotabato City may reach 34°C, while Basilan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi and Maguindanao del Norte could see temperatures of up to 35°C.
PAGASA urges vigilance during thunderstorms
While the regional forecast does not indicate continuous rainfall across Mindanao, PAGASA’s warning on localized thunderstorms highlights the possibility of sudden and intense downpours in affected areas.
Residents are advised to remain alert when thunderstorms develop, particularly those living in communities prone to flooding and landslides.
Motorists and commuters should also exercise caution during periods of heavy rain because sudden reductions in visibility, water accumulation on roads and slippery surfaces can create hazardous travel conditions.
Communities near rivers, creeks and other waterways are encouraged to monitor local advisories and be prepared to move to safer locations if flooding occurs.
Those living in mountainous and landslide-prone areas should likewise watch for signs of slope instability, especially after prolonged or intense rainfall.
PAGASA’s MINPRSD emphasized that weather conditions may change rapidly as localized thunderstorms develop, making continued monitoring of official weather bulletins important throughout the forecast period.
