DAVAO CITY — For thousands of patients battling chronic kidney disease across Mindanao, access to life-saving dialysis treatment has long been a daily struggle marked by long waiting lists, limited treatment slots, and costly travel to specialized medical facilities.

That burden is expected to ease significantly following the inauguration and blessing of the expanded Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) Kidney and Transplant Institute (KTI), a landmark healthcare development that promises to transform kidney care services in the region.
The new facility was formally blessed and inaugurated on June 30, coinciding with the culmination of National Kidney Month, highlighting the government’s commitment to expanding equitable access to comprehensive and quality renal healthcare.
At the heart of the expansion is the institute’s Renal Dialysis Unit (RDU), now equipped with 133 new state-of-the-art hemodialysis machines, dramatically increasing the hospital’s capacity to serve patients requiring regular life-sustaining treatment.
Beyond the dialysis center, the newly completed facilities include a fully operational pharmacy, clinical laboratory, immunology section, warehouse, billing and cashier offices, a mezzanine waiting area for patients and their families, and dedicated inpatient dialysis units located on the third floor.
Together, these integrated facilities are expected to streamline patient care by providing essential services under one roof, minimizing delays in diagnosis, treatment, laboratory testing, and medication access.
Addressing a growing healthcare challenge
Kidney disease continues to be one of the country’s fastest-growing health concerns.
According to Dr. Ma. Theresa Bad-ang, head of the SPMC Kidney and Transplant Institute, the Davao Region alone recorded approximately 6,000 dialysis patients in 2025, underscoring the increasing demand for specialized renal healthcare services.
Many patients require dialysis treatments multiple times each week to survive, making accessibility and availability of treatment facilities crucial to their quality of life.
The expansion of the SPMC Kidney and Transplant Institute is expected not only to accommodate more patients but also to reduce overcrowding and improve the overall efficiency of kidney care delivery throughout Mindanao.
Healthcare officials believe the upgraded institute will also strengthen SPMC’s role as the leading referral center for renal care in Southern Philippines.
More than new machines
The inauguration ceremony began with a solemn Holy Mass celebrated by SPMC Chaplain Father Angel, followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony and the formal blessing of the new facilities.
Healthcare workers, medical specialists, hospital partners, patients, and their families gathered to witness what many described as a milestone for public healthcare in Mindanao.
The celebration featured messages from SPMC Medical Center Chief Dr. Ricardo Audan and SPMC Dialysis Unit Head Dr. Jeanette Ybiernas, who both emphasized the institution’s continuing commitment to improving patient care through modern medical infrastructure and compassionate service.
Adding warmth to the occasion was a special performance by members of the Medical Dialysis Club (MDC) composed of dialysis patients, whose presentation reflected resilience, hope, and gratitude despite the daily challenges of living with kidney disease.
A reinforced lifeline
For Dr. Bad-ang, the expansion represents something far greater than a modern medical facility.
In her closing message, she stressed that the new Kidney and Transplant Institute symbolizes a renewed commitment to patients whose lives depend on timely access to dialysis and specialized renal care.
She emphasized that every additional dialysis machine, laboratory service, and treatment area represents another opportunity to save lives, improve patient outcomes, and provide hope to families facing the physical and financial burden of chronic kidney disease.
The newly expanded institute is expected to significantly strengthen SPMC’s capability to deliver comprehensive kidney care—from diagnostic testing and laboratory services to dialysis treatment and transplant-related support—serving patients not only from Davao Region but also from neighboring provinces across Mindanao.
A milestone for Mindanao healthcare
As the demand for renal healthcare continues to rise, the opening of the expanded SPMC Kidney and Transplant Institute marks a significant investment in public health infrastructure.
For many patients, the facility offers more than modern equipment and upgraded services—it represents shorter waiting times, improved access to specialized treatment, and renewed hope for a better quality of life.
With its enhanced capacity, advanced technology, and integrated healthcare services, the SPMC Kidney and Transplant Institute is poised to become one of the country’s premier centers for kidney care, reaffirming its mission of providing accessible, compassionate, and world-class medical services to every Filipino in need.
