TUBOD, Lanao del Norte—The Provincial Government of Lanao del Norte, through its Provincial Tourism Office (PTourism), in partnership with the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), recently conducted a Maranao Bead Accessories Training Program at the Provincial Women and Children Center (PWCC) from March 12 to 13, 2025.
The initiative was designed for the women and children currently housed at PWCC, a facility dedicated to providing a safe space for victim-survivors. The program aims to offer them avenues for healing, empowerment, and self-sufficiency. Many of the residents have already taken up crocheting, not only as a therapeutic activity but also as a means of generating income.
Recognizing their potential for expanded livelihood opportunities, the training introduced participants to the traditional craft of Maranao beadwork—an intricate art form deeply embedded in Mindanao’s cultural heritage. Characterized by its elaborate patterns, vibrant colors, and symbolic designs, Maranao beadwork is often incorporated into traditional clothing, jewelry, and ceremonial artifacts. Despite its cultural importance, this craft remains underrepresented in Lanao del Norte, making the initiative both a skill-building effort and a step toward cultural preservation.
Beyond providing a new source of income, the training serves a broader purpose: equipping participants with marketable skills while strengthening and promoting Maranao artistry in the province. By mastering this craft, the women and children at PWCC gain not only economic opportunities but also a deeper connection to their cultural roots.
Through such initiatives, Lanao del Norte continues to foster resilience and self-reliance among its people, ensuring that both individuals and the rich traditions of the Maranao community thrive for generations to come.
