MALAPATAN, SARANGANI PROVINCE – The Department of Public Works and Highways – Sarangani District Engineering Office has successfully completed the construction of a hanging footbridge in Sitio Kyondog, Barangay Kihan, Malapatan, providing residents with a safer and more reliable crossing over a frequently flooded river.

The Php5.789-million infrastructure project includes a 56-meter hanging footbridge, 83-lineal meters of slope protection, and a 35-meter concrete road. The footbridge, which was completed in July 2024 under the 2024 General Appropriations Act (GAA), addresses a long-standing challenge faced by the community.

Barangay Kihan, an inland barangay in Malapatan, is characterized by mountainous terrain and a river that has often isolated Sitio Kyondog residents, particularly schoolchildren, during heavy rains. In the past, they had to wade through the river, risking their safety, especially when water levels rose. The completion of the footbridge now ensures accessibility regardless of weather conditions.

“This project will greatly benefit the residents, providing them with a secure passage across the river, even during the rainy season,” said Construction Section Chief Edward D. Carillo. The new structure is expected to enhance mobility and economic opportunities for the community, allowing for safer travel to schools, markets, and other essential services.

With the completion of this project, the government reinforces its commitment to improving rural infrastructure and uplifting the lives of communities in geographically challenging areas.
