CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Authorities have launched an investigation after skeletal human remains, including a severed skull, were discovered in a grassy coconut plantation in Purok 5, GK Village, Zone 5, Barangay Balubal on Tuesday, raising the possibility that the remains could belong to a farmer who has been missing for nearly three months.

The grim discovery was made after a caretaker and barangay personnel passed through an overgrown area of the plantation, where they noticed a partially buried jacket. Upon closer inspection, they were shocked to find that the jacket contained what appeared to be a human skull that had already decomposed into skeletal remains.
According to initial reports, the skull was found without the rest of the body. Authorities believe the remains had been in the area for a considerable period due to the advanced stage of decomposition and the absence of any foul odor.
Barangay Balubal Captain Paolo Bactong confirmed the incident, saying he immediately received a report from barangay watchmen who were conducting routine roving operations in the area.
Based on the report relayed to him, the watchmen spotted a jacket that appeared to have been disturbed or partially unearthed in the coconut plantation. When they checked it, they discovered the severed human skull wrapped inside, prompting them to immediately notify barangay officials and the police.
Captain Bactong said the skeletal remains were found in a remote portion of the plantation, far from the main road and residential areas, leading authorities to believe the remains may have been deliberately abandoned there.
Following the discovery, police officers and investigators conducted an initial examination of the scene while search efforts were launched to locate the missing portions of the skeleton.
Authorities are also examining whether the remains could belong to a male farmer who was reported missing in Barangay Balubal approximately three months ago.
Captain Bactong confirmed that there is an existing missing person report involving a male resident from the barangay. However, he emphasized that there is still no confirmation that the skeletal remains belong to the missing individual.
Investigators are expected to conduct forensic examinations, including DNA analysis and other identification procedures, to establish the identity of the victim and determine the circumstances surrounding the death.
Police have yet to determine whether foul play was involved, and the case remains under active investigation.
Authorities are also appealing to anyone with information that could help identify the victim or shed light on the incident to coordinate with the nearest police station as efforts continue to solve the mystery behind the disturbing discovery.
