CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — Grief now blankets a family and an entire school community after the body of 15-year-old student Matthew Patrick Sumaylo was found floating near the coastline of Zone 1, Barangay Bonbon on Friday morning.

Sumaylo, a junior student of Liceo de Cagayan University and an active member of the Scouting Movement, had been missing for several days. His mother, aunt, and teachers confirmed that the body recovered from the waters was indeed Matthew.
According to his relatives, Matthew last communicated with his family on December 3. He told them he would hitch a ride home, but when they checked his ride-hailing apps, no booking was ever made. As the hours turned into days, his mother made repeated emotional public pleas for his safe return.
“Anak, uli na please. Mamatay ko ani, Kuya Matt. Unta naa lang siya sa maayong kabutang,” his grieving mother said earlier, her voice filled with fear and desperation.
Police investigators are now determining whether foul play was involved. They noted that Matthew’s cellphone was still intact in his pocket when he was found. His remains have since been brought to a local funeral home, where his heartbroken family finally came face to face with the tragic reality they had been praying would never come.
Teachers, classmates, and fellow Scouts describe Matthew as a kind, quiet, and dedicated young man — someone who lived out the values of loyalty, service, and brotherhood.
The Liceo de Cagayan University Scouting Community released a tribute, calling Matthew “a Scout whose spirit and dedication embodied the highest ideals of the movement.” They honored him as a graduate of the Emergency Service Training Course and a dependable friend who was “Always Prepared.”
“You embodied loyalty and helpfulness. Another Scout has gone home,” their message read.
The Kauswagan National High School Rover Scouts also expressed deep sorrow, saying Matthew “left the world a little better than he found it,” a legacy they say will continue to inspire those he touched.
One of his former classmates shared her heartbreak in a tribute post, recalling their camaraderie as fellow scribes in the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. She recounted moments from their camp, friendly competitions over knot-tying, and Matthew’s patience and willingness to help.
“You were my go-to friend whenever I had a question. You were kind, quiet, and patient. It’s so hard to accept that you’re gone,” she wrote.
As the investigation continues, the community joins Matthew’s family in mourning a young life cut short far too soon.
To the bereaved family of Matthew Patrick Sumaylo, may you find strength, comfort, and peace in this time of immeasurable loss. May his memory — filled with kindness, service, and brotherhood — live on in those who loved him.
Rest in peace, Matthew. Your Scout spirit will forever shine.
