OMAR, SULU — In a significant display of unity and reconciliation, the 1102nd Infantry “Ganarul” Brigade of the Philippine Army joined the 58th Founding Anniversary of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) on March 23, 2026, underscoring deepening collaboration between state forces and former revolutionary groups in advancing peacebuilding efforts across the province.

Held in Sitio Kan Biya, Barangay Angilan, the event gathered military officials, MNLF leaders, and community stakeholders in a shared commitment to sustain stability in one of Mindanao’s historically conflict-affected areas.

Brig. Gen. Alaric Avelino P. Delos Santos, commander of the 1102nd Infantry Brigade under the 11th Infantry “Alakdan” Division, described the Army’s participation as a reflection of its continuing dedication to inclusive peace processes.

“This engagement highlights our sustained commitment to strengthening cooperation through dialogue, mutual respect, and community engagement,” Delos Santos said.

He emphasized that the Philippine Army’s presence in the anniversary celebration signals a broader government approach—one that recognizes the importance of involving all stakeholders in preserving hard-earned peace gains and preventing the resurgence of armed conflict.

The MNLF, once a major insurgent force in Mindanao, has transitioned into a key partner in peace and development initiatives following decades of negotiations with the government. Its continued involvement in local peace mechanisms has been instrumental in promoting grassroots stability, particularly in Sulu.

Delos Santos expressed gratitude to the MNLF for its active support in implementing community-based programs such as “Rido-Free,” “Gun-Free,” and “Peace-Centered Communities.” These initiatives aim to address clan feuds, reduce the proliferation of firearms, and foster a culture of non-violence at the local level.

“Their cooperation significantly contributes to building trust and maintaining stability in our communities,” he added.

The anniversary event was attended by Lt. Col. Dante E. Mantes, commander of the 101st Infantry Battalion; MNLF leader Bhada A. Badah of Sitio Kan Biya; personnel from the 1102nd Infantry Brigade; and other partner stakeholders.

Ceremonial rites marked the historic occasion, followed by dialogue engagements designed to reinforce unity, strengthen mutual trust, and align efforts toward a shared vision of long-term peace and sustainable development in Sulu.

Beyond symbolic gestures, the gathering served as a platform for reaffirming commitments to reconciliation and cooperation—key pillars in the normalization process in the Bangsamoro region.

The 1102nd Infantry “Ganarul” Brigade reiterated its pledge to work closely with local government units, former combatants, and communities to sustain peace gains and support ongoing government reconciliation initiatives.

As Sulu continues its transition from conflict to stability, such engagements highlight the evolving role of both the military and former armed groups—not as adversaries, but as partners in building a more peaceful and resilient future.
