Most parts of Mindanao are expected to experience cloudy skies, rainshowers, and thunderstorms on Saturday, February 21, as a shearline continues to affect the region, according to the latest regional weather forecast issued at 5:00 a.m. by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

The forecast is valid from 5:00 a.m. Saturday, February 21, until 5:00 a.m. Sunday, February 22, with weather authorities warning of possible flash floods and landslides in areas that may experience moderate to at times heavy rains.

Shearline Affecting Large Parts of Mindanao

PAGASA reported that the shearline is currently affecting Caraga, Northern Mindanao, Davao Region, the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), and parts of SOCCSKSARGEN including North Cotabato, South Cotabato, Sarangani, and Sulu. These areas are expected to have cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and isolated thunderstorms throughout the day and night.

Meanwhile, the rest of Mindanao will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms caused by localized thunderstorms. Despite generally lighter conditions, severe thunderstorms may still trigger flash floods or landslides in vulnerable communities.

Wind and Sea Conditions

Moderate to strong winds from the northeast to north will prevail over the eastern section of Mindanao, with coastal waters ranging from moderate to rough, with wave heights estimated between 1.5 and 2.8 meters.

Other parts of Mindanao will have light to moderate winds from the east to northeast, while coastal waters will be slight to moderate, with waves ranging from 0.6 to 2.1 meters.

Zamboanga Peninsula Forecast

In the Zamboanga Peninsula, including Zamboanga City, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay, and Isabela City, weather conditions are expected to be partly cloudy to cloudy with intermittent rainshowers or thunderstorms.

Winds will remain light to moderate from the northeast, while coastal waters will be slight to moderate. Temperatures across the provinces may range from 24°C to as high as 32°C during the day.

Northern Mindanao Outlook

Bukidnon, Camiguin, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental, and Misamis Oriental will experience cloudy skies with rainshowers and thunderstorms for most of the forecast period.

Temperatures are expected to range between 19°C and 30°C, with winds generally light to moderate from the northeast. Some coastal areas, particularly Camiguin and Misamis Occidental, may experience moderate winds and sea conditions.

Davao Region Under Rainy Conditions

Across the Davao Region—including Metro Davao, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao Oriental, Davao de Oro, and Davao Occidental—cloudy skies with rainshowers and thunderstorms are expected to persist.

Moderate to strong winds from the northeast to north may affect coastal areas, with moderate to rough seas expected. Temperatures across the region will likely range from 22°C to 30°C.

SOCCSKSARGEN Weather

North Cotabato, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, and Sarangani will also experience cloudy conditions with rainshowers and thunderstorms. Winds will be light to moderate from the east to northeast, while coastal waters will remain slight to moderate.

Daytime temperatures in the region may reach up to 30°C, while nighttime temperatures may drop to around 23°C to 25°C.

Caraga Region

Residents in Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, and Dinagat Islands should expect cloudy skies accompanied by rainshowers and thunderstorms.

Moderate to strong winds will continue to affect coastal areas, with sea conditions ranging from moderate to rough, posing potential risks for small sea vessels.

BARMM Areas

Provinces in BARMM—including Cotabato City, Basilan, Lanao del Sur, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, Maguindanao del Norte, and Maguindanao del Sur—will also see cloudy skies with rainshowers and thunderstorms throughout the forecast period.

Winds will be light to moderate from the east to northeast, while coastal waters in some provinces may become moderate, especially in island areas.

Advisory

Authorities are urging residents, particularly those in flood-prone and landslide-prone areas, to remain vigilant as intermittent rains may continue across Mindanao. Fisherfolk and operators of small boats are also advised to exercise caution due to rough sea conditions in parts of the eastern seaboard.

PAGASA said it will continue to monitor the shearline and issue updates should weather conditions intensify.
