MINDANAO, Philippines — Large parts of Mindanao are expected to experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers and localized thunderstorms over the next 24 hours, with residents warned of possible flash floods and landslides during severe thunderstorms.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) Mindanao Regional Services Division (MINPRSD) issued its regional weather forecast at 5:00 a.m. on August 29, 2026, covering the period from 5:00 a.m. Saturday until 5:00 a.m. Sunday.
According to the forecast, a Low Pressure Area (LPA) was estimated at 3:00 p.m. on August 28 to be about 560 kilometers east-northeast of Itbayat, Batanes, at approximately 22.6°N, 126.9°E, based on all available data.
Despite the weather disturbance being located far from Mindanao, PAGASA’s forecast indicates that communities across the region should remain alert for thunderstorms and sudden heavy rainfall.
Widespread rainshowers and thunderstorms possible
Across Mindanao, skies are expected to be partly cloudy to at times cloudy, with rainshowers or thunderstorms possible in various areas.
The agency cautioned that severe thunderstorms could trigger flash floods or landslides, particularly in vulnerable communities, low-lying areas and locations near rivers, creeks and steep slopes.
The possibility of localized thunderstorms also means weather conditions may vary significantly over short distances, with some areas experiencing little or no rain while nearby communities could receive intense rainfall within a short period.
Residents are therefore advised to monitor weather conditions and local government advisories, especially when thunderstorms develop.
Zamboanga Peninsula
Zamboanga City and the provinces of Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur and Zamboanga Sibugay, as well as Isabela City, are expected to have partly cloudy to at times cloudy skies with rainshowers or thunderstorms.
Winds will generally be light to moderate from the south to southwest, while coastal waters are expected to remain slight to moderate.
Temperatures are forecast to range from 24°C to 31°C in parts of the peninsula during the initial forecast period, with daytime temperatures potentially reaching 33°C in the succeeding period.
Northern Mindanao
The same general weather pattern is expected over Bukidnon, Camiguin, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental and Misamis Oriental.
Bukidnon is forecast to record temperatures of about 20°C to 29°C, increasing to as high as 30°C in the succeeding period.
Camiguin could experience temperatures between 26°C and 31°C, while Lanao del Norte and Misamis Occidental are expected to range from around 24°C to 31°C initially.
Misamis Oriental is forecast to have temperatures of approximately 25°C to 31°C, with daytime temperatures potentially reaching 33°C.
Coastal waters in the affected coastal provinces are expected to be slight to moderate.
Davao Region
Residents across the Davao Region should also prepare for intermittent rainshowers and thunderstorms.
Metro Davao, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur and Davao Oriental are expected to experience partly cloudy to at times cloudy conditions with rainshowers or thunderstorms.
Temperatures could reach around 30°C to 31°C during the initial period and rise to as high as 33°C in several areas.
Davao de Oro is forecast to experience temperatures from 23°C to 31°C, rising to as high as 33°C, while Davao Occidental could see temperatures between 23°C and 30°C, increasing to about 32°C.
Light to moderate winds from the south to southwest are expected throughout the region.
SOCCSKSARGEN
In North Cotabato, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat and Sarangani, partly cloudy to cloudy conditions with rainshowers or thunderstorms are also forecast.
Temperatures in most areas are expected to range from 23°C to 31°C, with daytime highs potentially reaching 33°C.
Sarangani could experience temperatures of approximately 23°C to 30°C initially and up to 32°C during the succeeding period.
Caraga
The forecast also covers Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur and the Dinagat Islands.
Agusan del Norte could experience temperatures between 25°C and 32°C, while Agusan del Sur is forecast to range from 24°C to 32°C, with temperatures potentially climbing to 34°C during the day.
Surigao del Norte is expected to have temperatures of 25°C to 31°C, while Surigao del Sur could range from 24°C to 32°C.
The Dinagat Islands are forecast to experience temperatures between 26°C and 32°C, with daytime highs reaching up to 34°C.
Coastal waters throughout the coastal areas of Caraga are generally expected to be slight to moderate.
BARMM
Several areas of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) will likewise remain vulnerable to thunderstorms.
Cotabato City, Basilan, Lanao del Sur, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, Maguindanao del Norte and Maguindanao del Sur are all expected to experience partly cloudy to at times cloudy skies with rainshowers or thunderstorms.
Lanao del Sur is forecast to be among the cooler areas, with temperatures ranging from 21°C to 29°C initially and reaching up to 31°C.
Sulu and Tawi-Tawi could experience temperatures of 26°C to 31°C, rising to about 33°C.
Cotabato City and Maguindanao del Norte are expected to reach daytime temperatures of up to 34°C, while Maguindanao del Sur could also see temperatures rise to around 34°C.
Coastal conditions
PAGASA said winds across Mindanao will generally be light to moderate from the south to southwest.
For coastal areas, seas are expected to be slight to moderate, with wave heights generally ranging from 0.6 to 2.1 meters.
While these conditions are not forecast to produce generally rough seas across the region, fisherfolk, boat operators and other people travelling by sea are still advised to exercise caution when thunderstorms develop and to monitor local marine and weather advisories.
Public urged to remain vigilant
PAGASA’s warning regarding possible flash floods and landslides is particularly important because thunderstorms can produce intense rainfall over localized areas even when the broader regional forecast calls for only isolated rainshowers.
Residents in flood-prone and landslide-prone communities are advised to remain alert for rapidly rising water levels, swollen rivers and creeks, saturated slopes and other signs of potential hazards.
Motorists should also exercise caution during sudden downpours because reduced visibility and water accumulation on roads can create dangerous driving conditions.
Local disaster risk reduction and management offices are likewise expected to continue monitoring weather developments and issue appropriate warnings should severe thunderstorms affect their respective areas.
For communities in coastal areas, sea users are advised to monitor conditions before travelling and to avoid sailing when thunderstorms or hazardous weather develop.
