Authorities issue urgent reminder: road safety lapses cost lives

TAGOLOAN, MISAMIS ORIENTAL — A devastating road crash in Upper Sta. Ana claimed four lives, including a 1-year-old child and his mother, after a tanker truck lost control and collided with a bao-bao (three-wheeler) on Saturday afternoon.

Two female passengers identified as “Babyjane,” 33, and “Silvestra,” 61, died on the spot after the tanker slammed into the bao-bao they were riding. Moments later, the child of Babyjane — rescued in critical condition — was declared dead at the hospital.

The tanker driver, still unidentified as of press time, also died after being pinned when the overturned truck landed near the edge of a ravine.

how the tragedy unfolded

Initial investigation revealed that both vehicles were traveling in opposite directions — the bao-bao going uphill toward Malitbog, while the tanker truck was descending. Witnesses said the tanker appeared to lose its brakes, swerving violently before ramming the smaller vehicle. The collision forced the bao-bao off the roadside and down a slope, while the tanker flipped near the ravine’s edge.

Emergency responders from BDRRMO Sta. Ana, MDRRMO Tagoloan, and MDRRMO Malitbog rushed to the scene. Retrieving the victims proved extremely difficult due to the terrain and the tanker’s position.

The bao-bao driver, who suffered spinal injuries, remains conscious and is being treated at the Northern Mindanao Medical Center. Another child passenger survived but is in the ICU.

community in mourning

“Babyjane,” who had just come from a pre-wedding seminar with plans to marry soon, never made it home. Her fiancé and family are grieving deeply. Their two children, both injured, are still fighting for their lives.

Silvestra, a neighbor accompanying her, was also killed instantly.

The fatal crash has shaken the community of Sta. Ana, with families left shattered in the wake of a preventable tragedy.

authorities issue a strong warning: road safety is not optional

Police and disaster officials emphasized that early findings point to possible brake failure or overspeeding — both avoidable with proper vehicle maintenance and responsible driving.

Their message was clear and urgent:

“A single second of carelessness can destroy entire families. Road safety is a shared responsibility — and lives depend on it.”

Motorists are strongly reminded to:
✔ Conduct regular brake and tire checks
✔ Slow down on downhill and curved roads
✔ Avoid overspeeding and overloading
✔ Remain alert and focused
✔ Respect smaller and slower vehicles on the road

a wake-up call for safer roads

As Tagoloan mourns four lives lost — a mother, her child, a neighbor, and a truck driver — the call for stricter road safety enforcement grows louder. Residents are urging authorities to improve road signage, require stricter inspections for heavy vehicles, and enforce penalties for unsafe driving.

This heartbreaking incident serves as a painful reminder:

Lives can be lost in seconds. Drive responsibly. Protect your passengers, protect others, protect yourself. No family should suffer this loss ever again.
