OPOL, Misamis Oriental — Authorities intercepted a shipment of ₱5.85 million worth of suspected smuggled cigarettes during a joint anti-smuggling operation at a beach in Barangay Barra, Opol, Misamis Oriental, early September 2 after police received information about the alleged unloading of illicit tobacco products in the area.
The operation was launched following an alert received by the Misamis Oriental Maritime Police Station (MARPSTA) at approximately 1:30 a.m. regarding the alleged unloading of suspected illicit cigarettes along the coastal area of Barangay Barra.
Acting on the information, MARPSTA personnel coordinated with the Opol Municipal Police Station, Bureau of Customs (BOC) personnel and barangay officials of Barangay Barra.
The joint team proceeded to the reported location and conducted an operation at around 2:00 a.m.
Upon arrival, authorities reportedly intercepted a man identified by the alias “Ado,” 28, a resident of Camaman-an, Cagayan de Oro City.
The man was allegedly caught unloading cigarette products from an improvised floating device along the beach.
Authorities subsequently recovered 117 master cases containing a total of 5,850 reams of Cannon Menthol 100’s cigarettes.
The shipment was estimated to have a value of ₱5,850,000.
The recovered tobacco products were secured by authorities for proper documentation and are set to be turned over to the Bureau of Customs for appropriate disposition.
Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shipment, including its origin, ownership, intended destination and the identities of other individuals who may have been involved in transporting or receiving the cigarettes.
The operation highlights the importance of intelligence sharing and rapid coordination between law enforcement agencies in monitoring coastal areas that may potentially be used as entry or unloading points for undocumented goods.
The interception also demonstrates the role of maritime police units and local authorities in complementing land-based anti-smuggling operations by monitoring coastal communities and responding quickly to reports of suspicious unloading activities.
The seizure was carried out as part of the continuing anti-smuggling campaign of the Police Regional Office 10 (PRO 10) against the illegal movement of tobacco products and other contraband across Northern Mindanao.
PRO 10 Regional Director PBGEN Nestor C. Babagay Jr. said the successful operation underscores the importance of strong intelligence, swift police response and close coordination with partner agencies in addressing smuggling and other criminal activities.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the shipment, while the confiscated cigarettes remain in government custody pending proper documentation and disposition by the Bureau of Customs.
