CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, July 8, 2026 — Large parts of Mindanao are expected to experience cloudy skies, scattered rain showers, and thunderstorms over the next 24 hours as the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) continues to enhance rainfall across the island, prompting weather authorities to warn residents of possible flash floods and landslides.

According to the Regional Weather Forecast issued by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) Mindanao Regional Services Division (MINPRSD) at 5:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 8, the Southwest Monsoon remains the dominant weather system affecting Mindanao until 5:00 a.m. Thursday.

The weather bureau said Zamboanga Peninsula, the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), Lanao del Norte, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, and South Cotabato will experience cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms, with rainfall ranging from moderate to occasionally heavy.

PAGASA warned that these conditions could trigger flash floods and landslides, particularly in low-lying communities, flood-prone areas, and mountainous terrain.

“The public, especially those living near rivers, coastal communities, and landslide-prone areas, should remain vigilant as periods of moderate to heavy rainfall may occur throughout the forecast period,” the agency advised.

Rest of Mindanao to Experience Isolated Thunderstorms

Meanwhile, the rest of Mindanao—including the provinces of Bukidnon, Camiguin, Misamis Occidental, Misamis Oriental, Davao Region, North Cotabato, and the Caraga Region—will generally experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers and thunderstorms due to the prevailing Southwest Monsoon.

Although rainfall in these areas is expected to be less widespread, PAGASA cautioned that localized thunderstorms may still produce intense downpours capable of causing flash floods or landslides, particularly during severe thunderstorm events.

Zamboanga Peninsula Under Persistent Rainy Weather

Residents across the Zamboanga Peninsula—including Zamboanga City, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay, and Isabela City—can expect cloudy skies with frequent rain showers and thunderstorms throughout the day and into Thursday morning.

Temperatures across the peninsula are forecast to range between 24°C and 33°C, while light to moderate southwest winds will prevail over coastal waters, producing slight to moderate seas.

BARMM Remains Under Heavy Rain Threat

The entire Bangsamoro region—including Cotabato City, Basilan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao del Norte, and Maguindanao del Sur—will remain under cloudy skies accompanied by rain showers and thunderstorms.

Daytime temperatures across BARMM are expected to range from 22°C to 33°C, with light to moderate winds blowing from the southwest to west. Coastal waters are forecast to remain slight to moderate, with wave heights between 0.6 and 2.1 meters, generally favorable for small vessels but requiring caution during thunderstorms.

SOCCSKSARGEN Provinces Face Continued Rainfall

In SOCCSKSARGEN, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, and Sarangani are forecast to experience cloudy skies with rain showers and thunderstorms throughout the forecast period.

Temperatures are expected to range from 24°C to 32°C in South Cotabato and Sultan Kudarat, while Sarangani will see slightly cooler temperatures between 25°C and 30°C.

North Cotabato, however, will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers and thunderstorms.

Davao and Caraga Regions to See Afternoon Thunderstorms

The Davao Region—including Davao City, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao Oriental, Davao de Oro, and Davao Occidental—will generally have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers and thunderstorms.

Maximum temperatures are expected to reach 33°C, while minimum temperatures will range from 25°C to 26°C.

Similarly, the Caraga Region—including Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, and Dinagat Islands—will experience isolated thunderstorms, with temperatures ranging between 24°C and 34°C, the highest forecast in Mindanao during the period.

Northern Mindanao Also Affected

In Northern Mindanao, Lanao del Norte remains under cloudy skies with rain showers and thunderstorms due to the Southwest Monsoon, while Bukidnon, Camiguin, Misamis Occidental, and Misamis Oriental are expected to experience partly cloudy to cloudy conditions with isolated rain showers.

Temperatures across the region will range from 19°C in Bukidnon’s highlands to 32°C in the lowland and coastal provinces.

Sea Conditions Remain Generally Safe but Thunderstorms Pose Risks

PAGASA reported that winds across Mindanao will remain light to moderate, blowing from the southwest to west, while coastal waters will remain slight to moderate, with wave heights of approximately 0.6 to 2.1 meters.

Despite generally manageable sea conditions, fishermen and operators of small boats are advised to exercise caution as thunderstorms may generate sudden strong winds and rougher seas.

Public Urged to Stay Alert

PAGASA urged local government units, disaster response agencies, and residents across Mindanao to closely monitor weather updates, particularly in areas vulnerable to flooding and landslides.

Communities are likewise encouraged to prepare for possible disruptions caused by heavy rainfall and avoid crossing flooded roads or rivers during periods of intense thunderstorms.

The weather bureau will continue monitoring the Southwest Monsoon and issue updated advisories should weather conditions significantly change.
