CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines — Residents across Mindanao should prepare for scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms over the next 24 hours as localized thunderstorms continue to affect the island, prompting weather authorities to warn of possible flash floods and landslides in vulnerable areas.

In its latest Regional Weather Forecast issued at 5:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 7, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA)-Mindanao Regional Services Division (MINPRSD) said that Mindanao will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms throughout the forecast period.

PAGASA said the localized thunderstorms may intensify in some areas, increasing the risk of flash floods and landslides, particularly in low-lying communities, flood-prone areas, and mountainous regions.

Authorities urged residents to remain vigilant, especially during periods of heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning and strong winds.

Meanwhile, light to moderate winds blowing from the southwest to west will prevail over Mindanao, with slight to moderate coastal waters ranging from 0.6 to 1.2 meters, making sea conditions generally safe for most small fishing vessels and other marine activities, although fishermen are still advised to monitor weather updates before heading out to sea.

SOCCSKSARGEN

Residents in North Cotabato, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, and Sarangani should also anticipate isolated rainshowers and thunderstorms throughout the forecast period.

Maximum temperatures in the region are expected to reach 33°C, particularly in North Cotabato.

Super Typhoon Bavi Remains Outside PAR

Meanwhile, PAGASA reported that Super Typhoon Bavi (international designation 2609) remains outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) and is not directly affecting the country’s weather at present.

As of 3:00 p.m. Monday, the eye of the super typhoon was located approximately 2,120 kilometers east of Southeastern Luzon at 15.0°N, 143.8°E.

The cyclone packs maximum sustained winds of 205 kilometers per hour, with gusts reaching 250 kilometers per hour, and is moving west-northwestward at 20 kilometers per hour.

Although Bavi remains far from the country, PAGASA said it will continue to monitor the tropical cyclone’s movement while keeping a close watch on localized thunderstorms affecting Mindanao.

PAGASA advised the public to stay updated through official weather bulletins and immediately heed warnings from local disaster risk reduction and management offices whenever heavy rains and thunderstorms occur.
