Residents across Mindanao should prepare for unsettled weather conditions over the next 24 hours, as the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) forecasts partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers and localized thunderstorms affecting large parts of the island.

In its 5:00 a.m. advisory issued Friday, April 17, PAGASA warned that while rains may be intermittent, severe thunderstorms could trigger flash floods and landslides, particularly in vulnerable and mountainous areas.
Eastern Mindanao Faces Rougher Conditions
The eastern section of Mindanao—including the Davao and Caraga regions—is expected to experience more intense weather, with moderate to strong winds blowing from the northeast to east. Coastal waters in these areas will be moderate to rough, with wave heights ranging from 1.5 to 2.6 meters, posing risks to small sea vessels.
Metro Davao and nearby provinces such as Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, and Davao Oriental will see temperatures ranging from 23°C to 34°C, accompanied by frequent thunderstorms and gusty winds.
Similarly, Caraga provinces including Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, and Dinagat Islands will experience comparable conditions, with rough seas persisting along coastal communities.
Lighter Winds, But Continued Rain Elsewhere
In contrast, the rest of Mindanao—including the Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, SOCCSKSARGEN, and BARMM—will experience relatively milder conditions, with light to moderate winds coming from the northeast to north and sea conditions ranging from slight to moderate (0.6 to 1.5 meters).
However, these areas are not spared from rainfall. Provinces such as Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Bukidnon, Misamis Oriental, and Lanao del Norte will continue to experience scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms throughout the day.
Temperatures across these regions are expected to range between 20°C and 34°C, maintaining generally warm but humid conditions.
BARMM and Island Provinces Remain Vulnerable
In the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), including Basilan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, Maguindanao del Norte and Sur, and Lanao del Sur, weather conditions will remain unstable with occasional thunderstorms.
Coastal areas in these provinces may experience slight to moderate sea conditions, but authorities still advise caution, especially during sudden weather disturbances.
Advisory for Public and Mariners
PAGASA urges residents in flood- and landslide-prone areas to remain vigilant, especially during periods of heavy rainfall. Fisherfolk and small boat operators are also advised to exercise caution, particularly along the eastern seaboard where rough seas are expected.
The weather bureau emphasized that localized thunderstorms may develop rapidly, bringing sudden downpours, lightning, and strong winds.
As Mindanao continues to experience transitional weather patterns, authorities stress the importance of staying updated with official advisories and taking necessary precautions to minimize risks to life and property.
