DAVAO CITY — A young boy from Toril was rushed to the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) on December 25 after sustaining injuries from a firecracker blast, breaking the city’s long-maintained record of zero firecracker-related cases.
SPMC confirmed that the child suffered minor injuries to his right hand, but remains in stable condition.
The incident stands out in a city that has long been recognized for its strict enforcement of a landmark ordinance prohibiting the sale, transport, and use of firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices in any celebration. This policy has earned Davao City national recognition for consistently achieving zero firecracker-related injuries, particularly during Christmas and New Year festivities when such incidents surge in other areas.
Authorities reminded the public that the city’s firecracker ban remains fully in effect, and violations not only endanger lives but also undermine years of successful peace and safety efforts.
Officials urge parents to be vigilant and ensure that children comply with city safety rules, reinforcing the message that celebrations should remain injury-free and secure for all.
