Residents across Mindanao are advised to prepare for another day of cloudy skies, scattered rains, and thunderstorms as the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) continues to affect the region, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) in its 5:00 a.m. regional forecast released Friday.

PAGASA’s Mindanao Regional Services Division (MINPRSD), based in El Salvador City, Misamis Oriental, warned of possible flash floods or landslides in areas experiencing moderate to at times heavy rainfall. The weather bureau said light to moderate winds from the northeast to north will prevail, accompanied by slight to moderate seas ranging from 0.6 to 1.2 meters.

Cloudy Skies Across Mindanao

Almost all provinces in Mindanao — from Zamboanga Peninsula to Caraga, Davao Region, SOCCSKSARGEN, and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) — will experience cloudy skies with rainshowers and thunderstorms throughout the day and into early Saturday morning.

In the Zamboanga Peninsula, including Zamboanga City, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay, and Isabela City, cloudy skies and intermittent downpours are expected, with daytime temperatures ranging between 25°C to 31°C and slightly cooler evenings from 24°C to 30°C.

For Northern Mindanao, covering Bukidnon, Camiguin, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental, and Misamis Oriental, the same weather conditions will prevail. Inland areas such as Bukidnon may experience slightly lower temperatures, dipping to 19°C in the evening.

The Davao Region — including Davao City, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao Oriental, Davao de Oro, and Davao Occidental — will likewise have cloudy skies with rainshowers and thunderstorms. PAGASA forecasts daytime highs of 31°C to 32°C, with temperatures dropping to around 24°C to 25°C at night.

Meanwhile, in the SOCCSKSARGEN area (North Cotabato, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, and Sarangani), cloudy skies with occasional downpours are also expected. Temperatures may reach 32°C in the afternoon but could fall to 23°C at night.

The Caraga Region, including Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, and the Dinagat Islands, will see similar weather patterns, with moderate rainfall and thunderstorms. Coastal conditions will be slightly to moderately rough, with seas ranging from 25°C to 32°C during the day.

Rainy Conditions in BARMM

In the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) — comprising Cotabato City, Basilan, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao del Norte, Maguindanao del Sur, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi — PAGASA predicts cloudy skies with rainshowers and thunderstorms for the entire 24-hour forecast period.

Daytime temperatures in these areas will hover between 26°C and 33°C, while nighttime temperatures could drop to 23°C. Slightly cooler weather is expected in highland areas such as Lanao del Sur, where temperatures may fall to 20°C to 25°C.

PAGASA Advises Vigilance

PAGASA forecaster JPF, who prepared the report, reiterated that the ITCZ — a region where northern and southern hemisphere winds converge — is bringing moisture-laden air that enhances raincloud formation over Mindanao.

“Residents, especially in flood-prone and landslide-prone areas, are advised to remain alert and take precautionary measures as heavy rainfall may cause sudden flooding or landslides,” PAGASA said.

The public is also encouraged to monitor local advisories and updates from the PAGASA Regional Services Division – Mindanao and local disaster risk reduction offices.
