AWANG, MAGUINDANAO – The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is taking a more active role in the Bangsamoro peace process, pledging to align international assistance with the region’s development goals. This commitment was affirmed during a closed-door briefing organized by the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation, and Unity (OPAPRU) at the 6th Infantry Division’s headquarters on March 14.
Presidential Peace Adviser Secretary Carlito G. Galvez Jr. hailed this initiative as a “historic first,” emphasizing the DFA’s efforts to synchronize foreign aid with the Bangsamoro’s specific needs.
The OPAPRU and DFA will work closely to improve coordination between government agencies and international partners, ensuring enhanced collaboration in the implementation of foreign-funded peacebuilding and development initiatives.
The meeting also provided an opportunity for DFA executives to discuss pressing peace and security concerns with officials from the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP), particularly in preparation for the upcoming elections.
Significant strides have been made in the decommissioning and normalization process for former Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) combatants, with continued support from international partners playing a crucial role. Countries such as Türkiye, Norway, and Brunei have been assisting in decommissioning efforts, while Japan, Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom have contributed financial and technical assistance through various programs.
Additionally, the European Union has been instrumental in supporting the implementation of the Normalization Program, which aims to help decommissioned combatants reintegrate into society as peaceful and productive citizens.
Galvez highlighted that with steadfast international support, the Bangsamoro peace process is evolving into a globally recognized success story. “The commitment of our international stakeholders ensures that peace and stability in the Bangsamoro will continue to flourish,” he said.
