TALITAY, Maguindanao del Norte — Authorities have identified the man who was fatally shot in Barangay Kiladap, Talitay, on the afternoon of August 4, as a 21-year-old former overseas Filipino worker (OFW) from Tacurong City.

According to a progress report from the Talitay Municipal Police Station (MPS), the victim was identified through confirmation from his relatives as John Carlo Ong, a resident of Purok Dahina, Barangay Tina, Tacurong City.

The fatal shooting occurred at around 5:30 p.m. in Barangay Kiladap. Police investigators said the victim sustained gunshot wounds to the chin and back. He was immediately rushed to a hospital in an effort to save his life, but the attending physician declared him dead on arrival.

Authorities initially encountered difficulty in identifying the victim because he was not carrying any identification documents when he was found. Early police reports described him as wearing a black T-shirt and blue shorts, prompting investigators to seek assistance in establishing his identity before his relatives later confirmed it.

Police have yet to disclose the circumstances that led to the shooting, including whether the victim was specifically targeted or happened to be in the area when the attack occurred.

The Talitay MPS has launched an extensive investigation to determine the identity of the gunman or gunmen, establish the motive behind the killing, and identify any possible witnesses or evidence that could lead to the arrest of those responsible.

As of this writing, no suspects have been identified, and investigators continue to gather information surrounding the incident.

The fatal shooting adds to the continuing concerns over gun-related violence in parts of Maguindanao del Norte, where law enforcement authorities are intensifying efforts to solve violent crimes and bring perpetrators to justice.

Meanwhile, tributes have begun pouring in on social media following the confirmation of Ong’s identity. In a heartfelt Facebook post, one of his friends remembered him as a courageous and dependable companion whose cheerful personality left a lasting impression on those who knew him.

Rest in peace, pre John Carlo Ong.”

The emotional tribute reflects the grief felt by the victim’s family and friends as they mourn his untimely death while awaiting justice for his killing.
