SULTAN SA BARONGIS, Maguindanao del Sur — A long-standing land dispute has reportedly escalated into a violent rido (clan conflict) after two armed groups exchanged gunfire in Barangay Tugal, forcing some residents to flee their homes and leaving a six-year-old boy wounded by a stray bullet.
The armed confrontation, which erupted in the village, is believed to have stemmed from a dispute over land ownership that eventually turned into an armed feud between the involved groups. Authorities said the exchange of gunfire caused fear and panic among residents, prompting some families to evacuate to safer areas.
A six-year-old boy was hit by a stray bullet in the neck while the shooting was ongoing. He was immediately rushed to the Evangelista Medical Hospital in Lambayong, Sultan Kudarat, where he is currently receiving medical attention.
Initial reports from authorities said the child remained conscious while undergoing treatment, and medical personnel continue to monitor his condition.
Security forces and concerned government agencies have coordinated with barangay officials to ensure the safe evacuation of affected residents and prevent further escalation of the armed confrontation.
Authorities are also closely coordinating with the hospital regarding the condition of the injured child and any assistance that may be needed by his family. Meanwhile, the Municipal Social Welfare Office (MSWO) is preparing to conduct profiling of displaced families and provide possible support should the tension in the area continue.
The number of residents affected by the evacuation has yet to be fully determined as authorities continue their assessment.
Law enforcement personnel are expected to maintain security presence in the area while efforts are being pursued to de-escalate the conflict and explore peaceful interventions to address the root cause of the dispute.
The incident highlights the continuing challenge posed by land-related conflicts in parts of Mindanao, where unresolved disputes can sometimes trigger armed confrontations that put civilians, including children, at risk.
