ZAMBOANGA SIBUGAY – A Philippine Tarsier (Carlito syrichta) was safely rescued and released by the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) Zamboanga Sibugay, in coordination with the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) Kabasalan, on March 4 in Barangay J.S. Perfecto, R.T. Lim.
Local farmers discovered the tiny primate and immediately alerted personnel from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). A rapid assessment confirmed that the male tarsier, weighing 118 grams, was in good health with no visible injuries, allowing for its immediate return to the wild. Before its release, a tissue sample was collected using a Biopsy Punch Tool to aid future research and conservation efforts.
Given the species’ sensitivity to stress, the tarsier was reintroduced to its natural habitat on the same day, ensuring minimal disturbance. The Philippine Tarsier is classified as an “Other Threatened Species” under DENR Administrative Order 2019-09, highlighting the importance of continued conservation initiatives to protect its population.
PENRO Zamboanga Sibugay encourages the public to report sightings of distressed or injured wildlife to local authorities. Such actions contribute to the preservation of biodiversity and the protection of endangered species in the region.
