DAPITAN CITY, Zamboanga del Norte — Authorities intercepted an estimated ₱1.32 million worth of suspected smuggled cigarettes during a joint anti-smuggling operation at the Port of Dapitan on the evening of July 15, 2026, dealing another significant blow to the illicit tobacco trade in Western Mindanao.

According to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), the operation was conducted at approximately 6:45 p.m. by the Coast Guard District Southwestern Mindanao (CGDSWM) through the Coast Guard Station Zamboanga del Norte, in close coordination with several law enforcement and port security agencies.

The suspected contraband was discovered concealed inside a Ceres passenger bus that had departed from Zamboanga City and was bound for Bacolod City. The vehicle was scheduled to board a roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) vessel en route to Dumaguete City when authorities carried out the inspection.

During the operation, law enforcement personnel uncovered a total of 951 reams of BOSQU cigarettes and 204 reams of NEW MEGA MENTHOL cigarettes, all believed to have been smuggled into the country in violation of customs and taxation laws.

The successful operation was carried out through the combined efforts of the Coast Guard K9 Unit-Zamboanga del Norte (CGK9-ZDN), Coast Guard Sub-Station Dapitan (CGSS Dapitan), Special Operations Group-Zamboanga del Norte (SOG-ZDN), Coast Guard Intelligence Unit-Zamboanga del Norte (CGIU-ZDN), the Philippine National Police Maritime Group-Zamboanga del Norte, and the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) Port Police.

Authorities have yet to release details regarding the ownership or consignee of the seized shipment as investigations continue to identify those responsible for attempting to transport the illegal goods through the country’s maritime transport network.

The Philippine Coast Guard emphasized that the seizure underscores its unwavering commitment to intensifying the government’s campaign against smuggling, which continues to deprive the state of billions of pesos in tax revenues while facilitating the circulation of unregulated tobacco products.

Officials stressed that the operation also highlights the importance of strong inter-agency coordination in protecting the country’s ports from being used as transit points for illegal trade.

Beyond its economic implications, authorities noted that the crackdown also helps safeguard public health by preventing the distribution of untaxed and potentially unregulated tobacco products that do not undergo the same regulatory scrutiny as legally imported or locally manufactured cigarettes.

The PCG reaffirmed that it will continue to strengthen maritime security operations and intelligence-driven enforcement efforts across Western Mindanao to combat smuggling and other transnational crimes, while ensuring the strict implementation of maritime, customs, and revenue laws throughout the region.
