Davao City, Philippines – March 14, 2025 — In celebration of Women’s Month, the Department of Social Welfare and Development Field Office XI (DSWD FO XI), through its Gender and Development Technical Working Group (GAD TWG), conducted an orientation on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) related laws in Marilog Proper, Davao City. The initiative directly benefited 62 spouses enrolled in the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), reinforcing the government’s commitment to fostering gender sensitivity and promoting safe communities.
The orientation provided participants with an in-depth discussion on gender identity, gender roles, and the societal structures that influence power dynamics. A significant portion of the program was dedicated to Republic Act (RA) No. 11313, or the Safe Spaces Act, also known as the “Bawal Bastos Law.” This law seeks to address sexual harassment in public spaces, workplaces, and online platforms, highlighting the importance of fostering a culture of respect and equality.
Gemma M. Gulangayan, the 4Ps GAD focal person, underscored the importance of involving male participants in discussions on gender sensitivity and GBV. She stressed that raising awareness among men is crucial to dismantling harmful stereotypes and fostering mutual respect within families and communities.
“It is essential to educate and raise awareness about gender sensitivity and GBV,” Gulangayan said. “We aim to dismantle harmful misconceptions and empower men to understand and respect the multifaceted roles of their wives within the home and the community.”
Participants expressed gratitude for the opportunity to learn more about gender issues and the legal protections available to them. The initiative is part of DSWD FO XI’s broader efforts to integrate gender-responsive approaches into its programs, ensuring that both men and women play active roles in creating a more inclusive and equitable society.
As Women’s Month continues to be commemorated nationwide, DSWD XI remains steadfast in its advocacy for gender equality and the eradication of gender-based violence, emphasizing that education and awareness are fundamental steps toward long-lasting change.
