KIDAPAWAN CITY, COTABATO – The Mt. Apo Natural Park Protected Area Management Office (MANP-PAMO) celebrated a significant milestone on February 3, 2025, as it commemorated the 21st anniversary of Mt. Apo’s declaration as a protected area under Republic Act No. 9237, also known as the Mt. Apo Protected Area Act of 2003. The occasion underscored over two decades of relentless environmental conservation and sustainable management of the Philippines’ highest peak.
A highlight of the anniversary celebration was a tree-planting activity along the Mandangan Trail in Sitio Mandangan, Barangay Ilomavis, Kidapawan City. The initiative specifically aimed at rehabilitating denuded areas that suffered severe ecological damage following the devastating 2019 earthquake series. By restoring degraded lands, the activity sought to reinforce Mt. Apo’s resilience against environmental threats while maintaining its rich biodiversity.
The reforestation drive was spearheaded by MANP Cotabato, with the active participation of the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) of Cotabato, members of various People’s Organizations, local vloggers who dedicated their time to community service, and enthusiastic local volunteers. Their collective efforts underscored the critical role of community involvement in fostering environmental stewardship.
“This activity is more than just planting trees; it is a commitment to safeguarding our natural heritage for future generations. Our continued conservation efforts will ensure that Mt. Apo remains a thriving ecosystem,” said a representative from MANP Cotabato.
The tree-planting initiative is part of a broader strategy to mitigate the environmental impact of natural disasters and promote sustainable ecological restoration. It aligns with the long-term vision of ensuring the preservation of Mt. Apo’s diverse flora and fauna while enhancing the awareness and participation of the local community in conservation endeavors.
