MATALAM, Cotabato Province — A pastoral coordinator and community leader was shot dead by unidentified gunmen while reportedly on his way home in Sitio Esrael, Barangay New Abra, Matalam, Cotabato Province, on Monday evening, August 31, 2026.
The victim was identified as Eduardo “Eddie” Balindres, who was described by Barangay New Abra officials as a dedicated sitio leader and active community servant.
Initial information indicated that the shooting occurred at around 6:00 p.m. as Balindres was reportedly heading home. The assailants allegedly ambushed and fired at him before fleeing the area.
Balindres sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was killed in the attack.
Beyond his role as a sitio leader, Balindres was also known for his involvement in the Catholic Church and pastoral activities in the area. He served as a pastoral coordinator associated with Matalam Parish, where he helped coordinate with residents and took part in efforts to strengthen Catholic faith and community activities.
His death has triggered grief among residents and fellow church members, who remembered him for his community service, dedication and willingness to work with his fellow residents.
In a condolence message posted by Barangay New Abra, local officials described Balindres as a “brave and dedicated” sitio leader whose courage, service, kindness and commitment to the community would not be forgotten.
“Your service to Sitio Esrael and Barangay New Abra will never be forgotten,” the barangay said while extending condolences to the Balindres family.
The shooting has also raised concern among residents, particularly because the attack reportedly occurred while Balindres was simply making his way home.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the killing, identify the perpetrators and determine the motive behind the attack.
As of the latest available information, no suspect has been publicly identified and no motive has been confirmed. Investigators are expected to examine the circumstances before, during and after the shooting as part of efforts to determine who was responsible.
