Davao City – The City Health Office (CHO) has issued a call to parents to have their children, aged six and below, checked by health professionals if they exhibit symptoms of Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD), following a reported increase in cases at a local school.
Dr. Tomas Miguel Ababon, Officer-in-Charge of the CHO, emphasized the importance of immediate medical attention, particularly for children with weakened immune systems. He warned that children showing signs of complications such as seizures or severe dehydration should be taken to the hospital without delay.
A total of 30 cases of HFMD have been recorded at a school in the city, affecting students across 16 grade sections. In response, the City Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (CESU) is closely coordinating with school clinics, nurses, and doctors to monitor and report any new viral cases to the CHO.
Meanwhile, Ateneo de Davao University’s Basic Education Department (AdDU-Basic Ed) has shifted to online learning due to the rise in HFMD cases. The Jesuit-run institution announced that face-to-face classes will remain suspended until further notice to safeguard the health of students, faculty, and staff.
“The well-being of our pupils remains a top priority, and we are committed to implementing rigorous health measures to mitigate any potential spread,” said AdDU President Fr. Karel San Juan, SJ.
The school has implemented enhanced sanitation measures, including daily cleaning of classrooms, restrooms, and high-contact surfaces. Students are also being encouraged to practice frequent hand washing. In-person classes will resume once the situation stabilizes, and parents will be notified accordingly.
While HFMD is generally a mild viral illness, it can become more serious in children with pre-existing health conditions or compromised immune systems. Health officials have reassured the public that the disease is not a significant cause for alarm, but have urged vigilance in preventing its spread.
The CHO provided guidelines for parents to follow, including keeping children with symptoms isolated, ensuring proper hygiene practices such as hand washing, and disinfecting household items. Should symptoms worsen, parents are advised to consult their doctor or the nearest health center immediately.
