A six-year-old girl from Dumingag, Zamboanga del Sur has died after being bitten by a snake, in a tragic incident that has sparked renewed calls for improved access to life-saving antivenom in provincial hospitals.
The victim, identified as “Cassy,” was a resident of Lower Timonan in the municipality of Dumingag. According to initial reports, the child was bitten by a snake and was immediately rushed for medical treatment. Despite efforts to save her, she was declared dead at around 12:15 a.m. while undergoing medication.
Authorities have yet to release further details regarding the circumstances of the snakebite, including the type of snake involved and how long it took for the victim to receive medical attention.
As of this writing, the child’s remains are at a local funeral facility in Celerian and are expected to be brought home to their residence in Lower Timonan, where family and friends will pay their final respects.
The incident has triggered grief in the community and drawn attention to a critical gap in emergency healthcare services in rural areas—particularly the lack of accessible antivenom treatment. Residents and concerned citizens are urging the Department of Health Philippines and the national government to ensure that at least one hospital in every province is equipped with antivenom injections.
“Paunsa man mabuhi ang tawo kung mapaakan og bitin unya walay antivenom?” one concerned resident said, highlighting the dire consequences faced by snakebite victims in remote communities.
Reports indicate that antivenom supplies are limited and may only be readily available in larger urban centers such as Zamboanga City, leaving patients in far-flung areas vulnerable to delays that can prove fatal.
Snakebites remain a public health concern in many rural parts of the Philippines, particularly in farming communities where encounters with venomous snakes are more common.
