Basilan Province – Crime incidence in Basilan has dropped significantly from January to November this year, marking a major milestone in the province’s ongoing efforts to ensure peace and security. This was highlighted during the joint Provincial Peace and Order Council (PPOC) and Provincial Anti-Drug Abuse Council (PADAC) meeting presided over by Governor Jim Salliman.

The joint meeting served as a platform for the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to present their accomplishments in fostering a safer Basilan. Reports from Col. Eric Sales, deputy brigade commander of the 101st Infantry Brigade, and PNP Provincial Director Cerrazid Umabong emphasized the notable success of various anti-criminality campaigns.

Campaign Against Loose Firearms

A key factor in the crime reduction was the implementation of the Small Arms and Light Weapon (SALW) program, which effectively curtailed the proliferation of loose firearms in the province. This initiative was described as a “big boost” to anti-criminality efforts, complementing other strategies aimed at enhancing public safety.

Rido Settlements

Another significant contributor was the military’s proactive role in mediating and resolving rido, or family feuds, which have long been a source of conflict in the region. Under the leadership of Brigadier General Alvin Luzon, the military facilitated the resolution of 33 out of 42 recorded rido cases this year, fostering peace within affected communities.

Collaboration for Sustained Peace

Governor Salliman praised the concerted efforts of the police and military, underscoring the importance of collaboration between local government units, security forces, and the community. “This achievement is a testament to our united commitment to building a peaceful and progressive Basilan,” he stated.

The reduction in crime not only reflects the effectiveness of the SALW program and rido settlements but also highlights the broader impact of sustained community engagement and security reforms.

Looking Ahead

As Basilan continues its journey toward sustained peace and development, the provincial government and its partners remain steadfast in their efforts to address the root causes of violence and instability. Both the PNP and AFP vowed to intensify their initiatives to ensure the safety and well-being of every Basileno.

This significant crime reduction signals a hopeful future for Basilan, paving the way for economic growth and improved quality of life for its residents.
