ZAMBOANGA CITY — The Police Regional Office 9 (PRO-9) has deployed 821 police personnel to help ensure the safe, peaceful and orderly conduct of the 2026 Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) Parliamentary Elections, reinforcing security preparations for a crucial exercise of democracy in the region.
The deployment was carried out as PRO-9 mobilized its personnel for the vital task of protecting voters, election officials and other stakeholders throughout the electoral process.
The 821 personnel were entrusted with a clear mandate: to help protect the people’s right to freely and peacefully elect their leaders.
The deployment underscores the heightened security preparations being undertaken by law enforcement authorities as the BARMM prepares for its parliamentary elections, which will play a significant role in shaping the region’s political and governance landscape.
PRO-9 personnel will undertake their election security responsibilities in coordination with the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) and other government agencies and stakeholders involved in the electoral process.
The send-off was attended by COMELEC Zamboanga City Election Officers Atty. Stephen Roy Cañete of District 1 and Atty. Jan Christian Babiera of District 2, who represented Regional Election Director Atty. Wilfred Jay E. Balisado.
The participation of COMELEC officials highlighted the importance of close coordination between election authorities and the police in ensuring that security measures complement, rather than interfere with, the conduct of free and credible elections.
For PRO-9, the deployment carries a responsibility that extends beyond maintaining ordinary peace and order. Police personnel assigned to election duties are expected to remain professional, disciplined and impartial while ensuring that voters are able to cast their ballots without fear, intimidation or disruption.
The presence of hundreds of additional police personnel also reflects the importance of maintaining security in an electoral environment where political competition can generate tensions and where localized conflicts and other security concerns could potentially disrupt the exercise of the people’s democratic rights.
Authorities emphasized that the security personnel are there to protect the electoral process and the people participating in it, while respecting the independence of COMELEC and the political choices of individual voters.
As election preparations continue, police personnel are expected to work closely with election officers and local authorities in monitoring security developments, responding to incidents and helping ensure that election-related activities proceed peacefully.
The deployment also places a premium on the safety of election workers and other personnel tasked with administering the polls, particularly in areas where security conditions require a stronger police presence.
The 2026 BARMM Parliamentary Elections are expected to be closely watched as the Bangsamoro region continues its transition toward a parliamentary form of regional government.
