GENERAL SANTOS CITY – A social media complaint alleging inadequate care and prolonged waiting time at the Dr. Jorge P. Royeca City Hospital (DJPRCH) has drawn public attention after a patient shared her experience online, prompting the city-run hospital to launch a formal review while reaffirming its commitment to patient safety, quality healthcare, and transparency.
The issue began after Emma Palao posted on Facebook on August 1, recounting what she described as an overnight ordeal at the hospital’s Emergency Room.
In her post, Palao claimed that she and her husband waited from 7:00 p.m. until around 9:30 a.m. the following day after she underwent laboratory tests, including blood and urine examinations. According to her account, she was told that an ultrasound would be conducted the next morning. However, she alleged that instead of receiving further treatment, they were instructed to proceed to the admitting section to obtain discharge clearance.
Palao further claimed that despite allegedly experiencing bleeding, she was neither administered intravenous fluids nor given pain medication during her stay. Expressing frustration over her experience, she questioned the quality of services being provided by the hospital and appealed to city officials for attention.
Her post quickly circulated online, generating mixed reactions from netizens. While many expressed sympathy and concern over her experience, others urged the public to wait for the hospital’s explanation before drawing conclusions.
Hospital Launches Internal Review
On August 2, Dr. Jorge P. Royeca City Hospital issued an official statement acknowledging the concerns raised on social media and confirmed that it has initiated a comprehensive review of the incident.
According to the hospital administration, patient management is based on an individual clinical assessment, including the patient’s condition during consultation, diagnostic findings, laboratory results, and the professional judgment of attending physicians and healthcare personnel.
The hospital emphasized that decisions regarding admission or discharge are guided by established medical standards and evidence-based practice.
“A decision not to admit a patient does not mean that the concern was disregarded. It means that, based on the physician’s assessment at that particular time, inpatient care is not indicated,” the hospital stated.
DJPRCH also noted that a patient’s medical condition may change after discharge and encouraged individuals experiencing recurring, persistent, or worsening symptoms to immediately return to the nearest emergency room for reassessment.
The hospital further assured the public that it would communicate directly with the patient through appropriate and confidential channels and implement corrective or preventive measures should the review identify areas requiring improvement.
Hospital Chief Dr. Ryan Aplicador appealed to the public to rely on verified and official information while the internal review remains ongoing, emphasizing that transparency is essential in maintaining public trust in the healthcare system.
The hospital reiterated its commitment to providing “safe, respectful, evidence-based, and compassionate care” while encouraging patients to raise concerns through official patient assistance or hospital administration channels so that complaints can be properly documented, investigated, and addressed.
A Reflection of Broader Healthcare Challenges
While the circumstances surrounding this particular incident remain under review, the case has once again brought public attention to the challenges confronting many government hospitals across the country.
Healthcare advocates have long pointed to concerns such as overcrowded emergency rooms, shortages of medical personnel, limited hospital beds, inadequate facilities, increasing patient volume, and the demanding workload carried by healthcare workers. Medical professionals have likewise repeatedly emphasized the need for greater investment in public health infrastructure and workforce development to meet growing healthcare demands.
These systemic issues have often been cited in discussions on improving healthcare delivery, even as the government continues to promote ongoing reforms and expanded access to health services.
At the same time, healthcare workers frequently operate under difficult conditions, balancing heavy patient loads while striving to deliver timely and appropriate medical care with available resources.
Importance of Proper Complaint Channels
The incident also underscores the importance of utilizing established grievance mechanisms available within hospitals.
While social media has become a powerful platform for patients to share their experiences and raise public awareness, hospital administrations generally maintain patient assistance offices and complaint desks specifically tasked with receiving, documenting, investigating, and resolving concerns. These formal channels can facilitate direct communication between patients and healthcare providers while ensuring due process and protecting patient confidentiality.
Nevertheless, public discussions arising from social media posts can also serve as opportunities for institutions to review existing procedures, strengthen accountability, and identify areas where healthcare services may be improved.
As of this writing, the hospital’s formal review is ongoing, and no findings have yet been released regarding the specific circumstances surrounding the patient’s allegations.
Both the patient’s account and the hospital’s official statement remain part of the continuing review, with further information expected once the internal investigation has been completed.
