CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Large parts of Mindanao are expected to experience cloudy skies, scattered rains, and thunderstorms as the southwesterly windflow and the trough of Tropical Storm “Jangmi” continue to affect the island, according to the latest regional weather forecast issued by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA)-Mindanao Regional Services Division (MINPRSD).

In its 5:00 a.m. forecast issued Friday, May 29, PAGASA said the western section of Mindanao, particularly the Zamboanga Peninsula, SOCCSKSARGEN, and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), will continue to experience cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms due to the prevailing southwesterly windflow.

Meanwhile, the rest of Mindanao, including Northern Mindanao, Davao Region, and Caraga Region, will also experience unstable weather conditions due to the trough or extension of Tropical Storm “Jangmi.”

PAGASA warned residents in low-lying and mountainous areas to remain vigilant against possible flash floods and landslides caused by moderate to at times heavy rainfall.

As of 3:00 p.m. Thursday, Tropical Storm Jangmi was located approximately 1,235 kilometers east of Southeastern Luzon, packing maximum sustained winds of 75 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness reaching up to 90 kilometers per hour. The storm was moving slowly north-northwestward and remained outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).

Despite being outside PAR, PAGASA said the tropical storm continues to enhance weather disturbances affecting Mindanao through its trough.

Across the Zamboanga Peninsula, including Zamboanga City, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay, and Isabela City, cloudy skies with rainshowers and thunderstorms are expected to prevail through the forecast period. Temperatures in the region are expected to range from 24°C to 33°C, with light to moderate winds blowing from the southwest to west and coastal waters remaining slight to moderate.

In Northern Mindanao, provinces such as Bukidnon, Camiguin, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental, and Misamis Oriental are forecast to experience cloudy conditions with intermittent rainshowers and thunderstorms. Temperatures may range from 20°C to 33°C. Winds in the region are expected to come from the west to northwest with slight to moderate sea conditions.

The Davao Region, including Metro Davao, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao Oriental, Davao de Oro, and Davao Occidental, will also experience cloudy weather and occasional thunderstorms. Daytime temperatures could climb between 23°C and 34°C.

In SOCCSKSARGEN, including North Cotabato, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, and Sarangani, cloudy skies and scattered rains are expected to persist due to the southwest monsoon. Temperatures are forecast between 23°C and 33°C.

Caraga Region provinces, including Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, and Dinagat Islands, are likewise expected to experience cloudy weather with rainshowers and thunderstorms. Some areas in the region may experience temperatures reaching up to 35°C during daytime breaks in rainfall.

In BARMM, including Basilan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao del Norte, Maguindanao del Sur, and Cotabato City, residents are advised to prepare for continuous rains and possible thunderstorms. Temperatures in the region are expected to range from 21°C to 34°C.

PAGASA said eastern sections of Mindanao will experience light to moderate winds from the west to northwest with sea conditions ranging from 0.6 to 1.8 meters, while the rest of Mindanao will have winds from the southwest to west with sea conditions from 0.6 to 1.5 meters.

Authorities are advising residents, especially those living near rivers, coastal communities, and landslide-prone areas, to monitor weather bulletins and coordinate with local disaster risk reduction offices for possible emergency measures should heavy rains persist.

PAGASA continues to monitor Tropical Storm Jangmi and other weather systems that may affect the country in the coming days.
