ZAMBOANGA CITY — Authorities intercepted a van allegedly transporting a large volume of smuggled cigarettes during a pre-dawn checkpoint operation in Barangay Baliwasan on Sunday, April 6.

Operatives from the 2nd Zamboanga City Mobile Force Company (Seaborne), under the supervision of Police Lieutenant Colonel Alfie Salang, flagged down the vehicle at around 2:00 a.m. along San Jose Road as part of intensified anti-smuggling efforts in the city.

According to police reports, the van drew suspicion due to the driver’s unusual behavior upon approaching the tactical checkpoint. This prompted authorities to conduct a thorough inspection of the vehicle.

During the search, law enforcers discovered a substantial quantity of cigarettes believed to be smuggled and lacking the necessary transport and tax documentation. The entire cargo was immediately confiscated.

The driver of the van failed to present valid papers to justify possession and transport of the goods, leading to his apprehension. He was subsequently brought to a nearby police station for further investigation and proper documentation.

Authorities are currently conducting a full inventory of the seized items to determine their exact volume and estimated market value. Investigators are also working to trace the origin of the contraband and identify other individuals who may be involved in the smuggling operation.

The Philippine National Police reiterated its commitment to intensifying checkpoint operations and cracking down on illegal trade activities, particularly the smuggling of untaxed cigarettes, which continue to undermine government revenue and local industries.

Further charges are being prepared against the suspect as the investigation progresses.
