Authorities arrested two individuals after operatives of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group–Zamboanga City Field Unit (CIDG-ZCFU) intercepted a sport utility vehicle (SUV) transporting smuggled cigarettes during an anti-smuggling operation in Zamboanga City before dawn on Sunday, June 28.

The operation was conducted along San Jose Road in Barangay Zone 2, where CIDG personnel successfully flagged down the vehicle following an intelligence-driven operation targeting the illegal transport of contraband tobacco products.

According to the CIDG, the SUV was found carrying a shipment of smuggled or illegally imported cigarettes believed to have been intended for distribution in local markets. Authorities immediately arrested the vehicle’s driver and a companion, who were allegedly caught in the act of transporting the illicit cargo.

The suspects were taken into police custody along with the seized vehicle and the smuggled cigarettes, which are now undergoing proper inventory and documentation as evidence.

Investigators are preparing the filing of appropriate criminal charges against the two suspects for alleged violations of laws governing the illegal importation, transport, and distribution of smuggled goods.

The successful operation forms part of the Philippine National Police’s intensified campaign against smuggling, which authorities say continues to deprive the government of millions of pesos in tax revenues while fueling the underground trade of untaxed products.

Police have yet to disclose the estimated value and quantity of the confiscated cigarettes as authorities continue their investigation to determine the origin of the shipment, its intended destination, and whether the suspects are linked to a larger smuggling network operating in Western Mindanao.

CIDG assured the public that operations against smugglers and other economic saboteurs will continue as part of ongoing efforts to curb illegal trade and protect legitimate businesses and government revenues.
